…fuel price is not immediately reduced
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Federal Government until October 27, 2026, to address its demands or face possible nationwide industrial action.
The ultimatum was issued after the labour union’s meeting with the Minister of Labour, with the NLC saying no concrete commitment was secured from the government on the issues raised.
The NLC’s Acting General Secretary, Benson Upah, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
Among the union’s demands are a reduction in the pump price of petrol, which it said had risen as high as N1,429 per litre, and an upward review of the current N70,000 minimum wage.
According to Upah, the failure of the government to provide concrete assurances on the demands had left the issues unresolved.
He said the NLC had consequently directed its affiliates, state councils and civil society allies to commence mobilisation for possible nationwide action from October 27.
“The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has given the Federal Government until October 27 to address workers’ demands, as failure will lead to a nationwide strike,” Upah said.
The development comes amid growing concerns over the rising cost of living and the purchasing power of workers, with organised labour continuing to push for measures aimed at easing the economic burden on Nigerians.
