The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has warned Nigerians that traffickers are now exploiting gyms, recreational centres and fake job adverts to recruit victims.

NAPTIP spokesman, Adekoye Vincent, gave the warning on Thursday, November 5, 2026 during a joint briefing by security and intelligence agencies in Abuja.

He disclosed that traffickers who now mostly target women, approach victims in social places, posing as service providers offering assistance with domestic needs, shopping and other everyday activities.

According to him, they obtain victims’ phone numbers, appear dependable, and deliberately show up during difficulties such as vehicle breakdowns to gain trust.

Vincent also warned against fake job adverts, particularly online, saying many job seekers have travelled long distances only to fall into the hands of traffickers.

He shared a case of a lawyer who travelled from Benue State to a law chamber in Abuja but fell into the wrong hands.

He explained that traffickers often exploit desperation and the promise of a better life, using attractive job offers with little or no verification to convince victims to leave their homes and cut off contact with family members.

He urged Nigerians to avoid rushing into online friendships and to always verify the identities of people offering jobs, financial assistance or other opportunities.
