Rivers LG Poll: Police Confirm Explosions In Port Harcourt, Commence Investigation
The Rivers State Police Command says it is investigating two explosions that rocked the city of Port Harcourt in the early hours of Saturday amid a local government election in the state.
In a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, the police acknowledged the explosion at the Rivers All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat and another one at Rumuodumaya, the council headquarters of Obio/Akpor.
“The first explosion was reported at the APC Secretariat on Aba Road at approximately 3:00 AM. A security guard reported hearing a loud bang and, upon investigation, observed three black Toyota Hilux vans speeding away from the scene.
“The explosion caused significant damage, destroying the gate and shattering the windows of the building. Additionally, the security building was set ablaze.
“The second explosion occurred at the Obio/Akpor Council secretariat around 3:30 am. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a black Toyota Hilux van and a white Toyota Sienna minivan drive past the secretariat.
“The occupants of these vehicles allegedly threw an object, suspected to be a stick of dynamite, which shattered the roof and caused damage to the generator house of the complex,” the statement read in part.
In response to these incidents, police said the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) and Anti-Bomb Squad have been mobilized to both locations.
According to the Command, an improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered at the APC secretariat, and the team has identified the use of incendiary materials in the arson of the security building.
The statement further added that the Command’s Explosive Ordinance Department has collected samples from both sites and is actively investigating the situation.
Channels Television had reported that an explosion rocked the secretariat of the Rivers State All Progressives Congress led by Tony Okocha.
The gate of the secretariat and the doors were shattered by the explosion which happened around 3:20 am.
The Chairman of the faction of APC in Rivers State, Tony Okocha narrated how the incident happened and blamed it on the governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
“About 3:20 am some gun-trotting young men with their explosives and all that, came here and dropped the first explosive, maybe because the one they dropped here did not detonate, they came back the second time to burn the structure – look at the security house is gone.
“Behind me, you will see that there was also an attempt, our people came and we were able to quench the fire,” Okocha said.
“Is the APC secretariat here any voting unit? There is no voting unit here. So, it was deliberate to see how they can annihilate us, it is deliberate to see how they can embarrass us, it is deliberate to see how they can decimate us.”

Jigawa Police command has confirmed the death of 95 people and 50 got diffident degrees of injuries in Majiya village of Taura local government area in Jigawa.
Confirming that accident, the Jigawa state command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams, said, “Today (Wednesday) a Petro Tanker from Porthacourt going to Nguru in Yobe state reached Majiya village of Taura local government area at around 12:30 am the driver lost control at Majiya and it falls”.
The PPRO added; “The content in the Tanker floors and flooded gutters and drainages in the village. Seen that the villagers started fetching the fuel where the petrol going into flame”.
DSP Shiisu disclosed, “As a result, 95 people confirmed died, and 50 have been hospitalised receiving treatment”.
He, therefore, advised the people to distance themselves from a situation of that nature.

Kwara State Police Command has dismissed three policemen for alleged murder of a student.
The deceased, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, was on September 4, this year shot dead by trigger-happy policemen at Fate, Ilorin.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said after an investigation and an internal disciplinary trial, the three officers –AP/No 233828 INSPR. Abiodun Kayode, AP/No 287410 INSPR. James Emmanuel, and F/No 497868 SGT. Oni Philip – were found guilty of offences ranging from leaving beat, corrupt practices to unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority.
“Consequently, they have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, with effect from 4th October, 2024,’’ he added.
They would be arraigned in court soon, he said.

A 45-year-old man, simply identified as Kazeem, has drowned in a river at Odo Tente, a boundary community between Lagos and Ogun States.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Friday around 11 am.
Before the incident, Kazeem was said to have taken a hard drug suspected to be Colorado.
The deceased, who soon started to act under the influence of the drug, reportedly ran uncontrollably and jumped into the river.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, while confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, stated that he drowned in the process.
The statement read, “On 11/10/2024 at about 11 am, a complainant reported at Alagbado Division that one Kazeem, ‘M’ aged 45, under the influence of a hard drug suspected to be Colorado, ran uncontrollably and jumped into a river at Odo Tente boundary between Lagos and Ogun State.
Sequel to this, the victim drowned and died.”
Hundeyin further stated that detectives from the Alagbado Division visited the scene and took photographs of the deceased.
The police spokesman added that the father of the deceased, when contacted, directed that the corpse be buried immediately by the riverside according to their tradition.
He, however, noted that the police had commenced an investigation into the incident.
