Acting COAS Oluyede Commits To Achieving Lasting Peace In Nigerian

The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Major General Olufemi Oluyede, has assured Nigerians of his commitment to achieving lasting peace across the nation if confirmed in a substantive capacity.

Oluyede stated this when he appeared before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Defence and Army at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Wednesday.

Addressing the committee, Oluyede emphasized the importance of collective efforts in tackling the country’s security challenges, and noted that every Nigerian has a role to play in ensuring peace. He also highlighted the necessity for robust alliances with neighboring countries and strengthened collaboration among security agencies.

He said: “I am honored this evening to be considered worthy to play a part in these efforts, and I look forward to contributing my utmost best by working with the National Assembly and other stakeholders in bringing lasting peace to the length and breadth of our dear country, Nigeria.

“I humbly appear before you today to be confirmed as the 24th Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army. This opportunity has arisen due to the tragic passing of the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, after a brief illness.”

Oluyede recounted his recent appointment as Acting Chief of Army Staff, explaining that it was initially intended to be temporary.

“Before his passing, I had been appointed by Mr. President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to act in his place, pending his expected full recovery and resumption of duty. Following Lieutenant General Lagbaja’s demise and state funeral on 15 November 2024, Mr. President, in his wisdom, deemed me worthy to fully continue the excellent work being done by the Army, subject to confirmation by the National Assembly,” he said.

With over 30 years of service in the Nigerian Army, Oluyede assured the committee of his preparedness for the role.

“My exposure to national security issues at the junior, middle, and senior cadres of the military profession has prepared me adequately for this assignment. In the past five years, I have operated at senior operational and management levels of the Nigerian Army, gaining insight into its overall functioning,” he stated.

Acknowledging both the achievements and setbacks of the Army in recent years, the Acting COAS pledged to lead with a vision for positive change if confirmed; this is as he underscored the need for unity in addressing Nigeria’s security issues.

“I see my nomination as a privileged opportunity to bring about more positive changes to the Nigerian Army, enabling it to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities. If confirmed, I promise to justify the confidence reposed in me by Mr. President, the National Assembly, and the Nigerian people.

“The security environment in which we find ourselves as a nation requires a united effort from every Nigerian. We also need strong bilateral and multilateral alliances with our neighbors and enhanced collaboration among security agencies,” he said.

He commended President Tinubu’s administration for its efforts in creating a secure environment conducive to socioeconomic development, and stressed the importance of tactical air support for the Army.

“Aircrafts have different strata of employment. The air support we require as an army is at the tactical level, where aircraft are readily available during combat operations. The Air Force, being the main player in this sphere, provides strategic cover. We need tactical aircraft and an air wing to support our operations effectively,” he explained.

Oluyede reaffirmed his commitment to fostering cooperation among the Armed Forces, noting that such synergy is essential for improving security and promoting socioeconomic development.

“There is already robust cooperation between the Armed Forces, and I intend to enhance this to ensure better outcomes for Nigeria,” he added.

During the screening, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Rep. Babajimi Benson, addressed the evolving security challenges facing Nigeria.

He said: “Our country continues to grapple with an evolving spectrum of security threats, ranging from insurgency and banditry to communal clashes and cyber threats. For over a decade, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have been at the forefront of addressing these challenges, launching numerous operations and providing vital support to internal security efforts,” Benson said.

He commended the Armed Forces for their recent successes, and acknowledged the need for sustained efforts to achieve peace.

“It is clear that more work remains to be done to achieve sustainable peace across all regions of the country,” he said.

The Chairman emphasized the importance of adopting innovative strategies to address modern security threats.

“The current dynamics of global security demand innovative and adaptive strategies. Threats are no longer confined to traditional battlefields; they now extend to cyberspace, economic domains, and even the socio-political fabric of nations. We must prioritize a forward-looking approach to national defense, ensuring that our military is well-equipped and adequately trained to address both conventional and emerging threats,” he stated.

The chairman further highlighted the role of the National Assembly in supporting the Armed Forces.

“Our task today is not only to assess the qualifications and vision of the nominee for Chief of Army Staff but also to establish a collaborative roadmap for tackling Nigeria’s security challenges. As partners in the pursuit of a secure and prosperous Nigeria, we remain steadfast in our commitment to legislative oversight and support for the Armed Forces,” he said.

Benson also assured the committee’s dedication to ensuring accountability and transparency in military operations.

“We will continue to provide the necessary legal frameworks, advocate for adequate funding, and monitor the implementation of appropriations. The position of Chief of Army Staff carries immense responsibility, and the individual in this role must lead with integrity, professionalism, and a deep commitment to the protection of lives and property,” he noted.

He therefore urged Oluyede to foster synergy among security agencies and prioritize the welfare of troops.

“If confirmed, you will be expected to foster synergy among security agencies, prioritize the welfare of troops, and uphold the trust of Nigerians. This committee will ask questions that reflect the concerns of our constituents and the nation. We urge you to provide comprehensive and candid responses to guide our deliberations,” Benson said.

Rep. Benson expressed optimism about Oluyede’s potential contributions to national security.

“Your role is pivotal in Nigeria’s journey toward lasting peace and stability. We look forward to working with you to achieve this goal,” he said.

The outcome of the screening exercise will be reviewed and presented to the House during plenary on Thursday.

Governor Alex Otti says he is not bothered about the noise coming from members of the opposition parties in Abia State.

Otti said his critics should not be taken serious as they are not coming out to contest elections but to seek negotiations and relevance.

Governor Otti stated this while receiving the member representing Bende North constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, Nnamdi Ibekwe who recently dumped the PDP and joined the Labour Party, LP in Abia State.

“We are not bothered about the oppositions and their noise. There are different reasons why people show up for elections.

Sometimes, they just want recognition; that their names showed up for the primaries, knowing fully well that they will not win the election.

“Some of them also come for negotiations and then of course, some others also show up for projections; they look at themselves and say, ‘if I start the noise in 2025, maybe by 2040, they will know that I have been in the race and they will call me and recognize me’, so they are projecting themselves,” Gov. Otti explained.

Governor Otti said he is rather focused on doing the job the people elected him to do and respond to the noise of the opposition across the State.

He congratulated Nnamdi Ibekwe for dumping the PDP for LP, explaining that nobody pressured him to come over to the LP, reiterating that he does not emphasize much on political platforms.

Earlier while presenting himself to the Governor, the member representing Bende North constituency, Nnamdi Ibekwe said he was attracted to the Labour Party by the achievements of Governor Alex Otti which he described as unprecedented.

IGP Egbetokun orders his men to resume issuance of tinted glass permits

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Nigeria Police Force has directed his men to resume the issuance of tinted glass permits across the country.

This development was announced in a statement released on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

According to the Force spokesperson, the move comes in response to rising concerns and complaints from the public over the harassment of vehicle owners by law enforcement agents for using factory-fitted tinted windows.

“The Nigeria Police Force, under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has reactivated the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) nationwide through a secure and user-friendly digital platform.

“This initiative comes in response to widespread public complaints about the harassment of motorists over the use of tinted windows and reflects the need for a clear, transparent, and accountable process for regularising factory-fitted tinted glass on vehicles”, the statement partly read.

Highlighting the prevalence of modern vehicles designed with tinted windows for comfort and aesthetics, the police emphasised the importance of having a formal system to regulate usage.

“With modern automobiles increasingly manufactured with tinted windows, it has become essential to provide a standardised system that accommodates legitimate use while ensuring public safety.

“Tinted vehicles have often been exploited for criminal purposes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, ‘one-chance’ scams, and other forms of banditry”, Adejobi explained.

According to the statement, the abuse of tinted windows by criminals creates operational challenges for law enforcement and compromises national security.

In addition, he explained that law enforcement will begin active implementation after the grace period, and the police warn that officers who misuse the enforcement process will be sanctioned.

“Enforcement will commence at the end of this period. Officers found engaging in unprofessional conduct, such as extortion or harassment, in the course of enforcement will be decisively dealt with in accordance with extant disciplinary procedures”, he said.

Spokesperson Warns Nigerians Against Fake Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Recruitment Scam

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has raised alarm over a fake recruitment scam circulatingonline, falsely claiming to be from the ministry and offering jobs in Nigeria’s diplomatic missions abroad.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the spokesperson of the Ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said the public should disregard any such messages, stressing that the ministry does not recruit directly.

“We want to put on record that the ministry don’t recruit officers directly, not at all,” Ebienfa said. “Recruitment of foreign service officers is done by the Federal Civil Service Commission and not by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

According to him, the scam started with online advertisements falsely signed by the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, and in the last 24 hours, scammers have moved further by sending fake employment letters to unsuspecting Nigerians.

“One of the fake messages reads: ‘We are pleased to inform you that your application has been considered for diplomatic services at the Embassy of Nigeria in Juba, South Sudan to take effect 12 May 2025.

“It even directs candidates to pay N165,800 for a diplomatic passport”, he said.

Ebienfa described the offer as entirely fake. “This did not emanate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,.

“There is no way you will be recruited into the Nigerian Diplomatic Service and without going through the process of training, which is the Foreign Service Academy”, he said

He clarified that all recruits into the Foreign Service go through a clear and formal process: recruitment by the Federal Civil Service Commission, training at the Foreign Service Academy, then eventual deployment abroad.

“The first deployment is one year of attachment. Subsequent postings last three years,” he said.

He therefore warned that no Nigerian should believe any job offer claiming to be directly from the ministry, or pay for a diplomatic passport.

“Diplomatic passports are free. “Even official passports for civil servants are free. So nobody should fall victim”, he said.

Ebienfa noted that the scammers are using the names of top officials of the ministry, including his own. “They are sending out emails with my name as the signatory,” he said.

In response to questions from journalists about efforts to stop the scammers, Ebienfa said the ministry would involve security agencies. “What the ministry intends to do is to write officially to the relevant security agencies to track the persons behind this website and the emails,” he said. “If someone is paying money, definitely there will be an account that will be provided for the payment.”

He warned that if the scam continues unchecked, it could damage Nigeria’s image abroad. “Tomorrow you will see unsuspecting Nigerians arriving in different countries with fake documents. When real officers show up, there could be confusion.”

He promised that more disclaimers would be issued via the ministry’s social media platforms, and that action would be taken to protect both Nigerians and the integrity of the foreign service.

“This is not just about fake news. It is about protecting Nigerians from losing their hard-earned money and protecting the name of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs”, the spokesperson stated.
