Ruud Ends Djokovic Jinx In Monte Carlo To Set Up Tsitsipas Title Clash

Published

on

Casper Ruud finally defeated Novak Djokovic at the sixth attempt on Saturday, setting up a Monte Carlo Masters title showdown with Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Norwegian eighth seed Ruud, who had been swept off the court by the world number one in a demoralising French Open final loss last year, came through 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in his semi-final when Djokovic double-faulted after saving two match points.

An inspired Tsitsipas handed world number two Jannik Sinner just his second loss of the season as the two-time champion Greek booked his place in Sunday’s final, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

“I’m super-happy, this is a day I will remember for a really long time,” said Ruud who had never taken a set off Djokovic in their five previous meetings.

“I’ve never beaten Novak and I’ve never beaten a world number one. I’m still in a little bit of shock.”

Ruud and Djokovic traded breaks in the final set, with the Norwegian getting the final word when Djokovic blinked first after just over two and a quarter hours.

“I was up and he came back, the top guys are good under pressure,” Ruud said. “I was just hoping the match would not slip away.

“In the last game I was hoping something or someone up above was listening… I was so happy to see that last ball sail along.”

On Sunday’s final, Ruud added: “Stef will be tough in the final but I will give it my all.”

Djokovic was competing in his first semi-final in Monte Carlo since he lifted his second title in 2015. He was hoping to reach a 59th Masters final.

“Congratulations to Casper. He played really good, especially in the beginning of the first and third set,” said the 36-year-old top seed.

“Of course I’m disappointed now, to lose a match like this… it was a close one.”

‘Great Day’
Tsitsipas’s victory ended the nine-match winning streak of Australian Open champion Sinner who also has titles in Rotterdam and Miami to his name this season.

“Today was a great day, I’m hoping for a good recovery and a fresh mind,” said Tsitsipas. “I hope to come out extra strong tomorrow.”

Sinner began the final set, during which he was twice treated for a right knee injury, with a break of serve.

But he lost it in the eighth game after saving four break points which allowed Tsitsipas to level at 4-4.

The Greek then finished it off by playing what he called “tennis at the highest level that I’ve been able to play recently”.

Tsitsipas, ranked 12th, won the title in Monte Carlo in 2021 and 2022 and declared he is returning to top form after falling out of the top 10.

“It will help my confidence to have a win like this,” he said. “I’m aiming for the top level again.”

Tsitsipas secured the opening set with a break in the third game, but the Italian put up a fight to level in the second.

Sinner broke on the way to a 3-0 lead and fought to save five break points in a 13-minute marathon final game before squaring the match on his second set point.

Sinner said a poor third-set line call caused him to cramp up and lose focus.

Instead of a double-fault being called, which would have given the Italian a double break, the point played on, with Tsitsipas holding serve for 2-3.

After two more games, Sinner called for the trainer.

“It’s hard to accept it,” the Italian second seed said of the call. “I was playing really well at that time.”

“Everyone can make a mistake. Afterwards, I had cramps, most likely because of what happened, because it also affects your nerves.”

Nwaneri scores first league goal as Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest

Published

on

Arsenal ended their four-game Premier League winless streak in emphatic fashion, defeating Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Saturday to mark Mikel Arteta’s 250th game in charge.

Bukayo Saka, Thomas Partey, and teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri found the back of the net as the Gunners achieved a historic milestone of 2,000 top-flight victories—becoming just the second team in English football history to do so.

The breakthrough came in the 14th minute when Bukayo Saka lit up the Emirates Stadium with a stunning goal.

Collecting a lofted pass from Jorginho, Saka combined cleverly with Martin Odegaard, surged past three defenders on the edge of the area, and rifled a superb shot past Matz Sels. The strike marked his third consecutive goal against Forest in as many meetings.

Arsenal nearly had a dream start just four minutes into the game when Jurrien Timber appeared to have scored from a rebound after Mikel Merino’s header, but the celebrations were cut short by a VAR-backed offside decision.

Nevertheless, Saka’s opener set the tone for a dominant performance as the Gunners controlled the game against Forest, who came into the match unbeaten in five away trips this season.

Thomas Partey, introduced at the break, doubled Arsenal’s lead just six minutes into the second half.

Once again, Saka was the architect, finding Partey in acres of space on the edge of the box. The Ghanaian took a touch before unleashing a powerful strike that sailed past Sels into the back of the net.

Forest struggled to trouble Arsenal’s defence, failing to register a shot on target as the Gunners maintained their dominance.

The victory was crucial for a team that had seen leads slip in recent weeks, most notably against Liverpool and Chelsea.

Nwaneri scores first EPL goal

In the 81st minute, 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri replaced Gabriel Jesus, and just four minutes later, he made his mark.

Fellow substitute Raheem Sterling advanced down the right flank and cut the ball back to the teenager, who steered it expertly into the bottom corner. It was a moment of brilliance and composure from Nwaneri, who continues to showcase his immense potential.

The Gunners nearly conceded a late consolation goal when Jota Silva tucked home a Chris Wood knockdown, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Arsenal’s clean sheet and commanding performance were a fitting conclusion to a historic afternoon.

What’s next?

Arsenal turn their attention to European competition with a Champions League trip to Portugal to face Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.

They’ll return to Premier League action next Sunday with a trip to West Ham United before hosting Manchester United at the Emirates on 4 December.

This victory not only ends Arsenal’s recent struggles but also signals their intent to push for the top spots in the league as the busy winter schedule approaches.

Chelsea narrowly escape at King Power Stadium, trounce Leicester 2-1

Published

on

Chelsea survived a late Leicester rally to win 2-1 on Enzo Maresca’s return to the King Power Stadium on Saturday, moving just a point behind second-placed Manchester City in the Premier League.

The visitors, finding their groove after the international break, hogged the ball from the kick-off and Nicolas Jackson gave them a deserved early lead.

But they failed to make the most of their superiority until 15 minutes from time, when Enzo Fernandez scored to make it 2-0, before surviving a nervy few minutes after Jordan Ayew pulled a goal back for the home side.

Chelsea’s win, which came after two draws, lifts them to 22 points — one behind City and three clear of fourth-placed Arsenal ahead of the later kick-offs on Saturday.

It was Maresca’s first game at the King Power since he took Leicester back to the Premier League last season in his only campaign at the club.

Chelsea zipped the ball around with confidence in the opening stages on a soggy afternoon in the English Midlands.

Joao Felix, making his first Premier League start of the season, fired wide in the 13th minute and then a minute later volleyed over from just outside the box.

But moments later Chelsea got the goal they deserved when Jackson won his tussle with Leicester defender Wout Faes, who missed a number of chances to clear.

Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen kept out Noni Madueke’s sharp effort and Madueke had a goal disallowed for a tight offside against Marc Cucurella just after the half hour.

But as the first period wore on there was a momentum shift and Leicester suddenly started looking more dangerous.

Steve Cooper’s men broke at pace and Oliver Skipp found Kasey McAteer on the right.

McAteer, making his full Premier League debut, cut inside but steered his shot just beyond the far post.

Wilfred Ndidi then screwed wide as half-time approached.

Chelsea looked certain to double their lead 10 minutes after the restart but somehow contrived to squander the chance, when Madueke got in the way of a Cole Palmer shot on the goalline.

It came after Hermansen saved Jackson’s shot.

England international Madueke did his best to try and jump out of the way of Palmer’s effort but it hit him and rolled out for a goalkick, with Palmer seeing the funny side.

But Chelsea did find the net in the 75th minute when Fernandez headed home after Hermansen kept out Jackson’s header.

Leicester substitute Ayew pulled a goal back from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time after Bobby De Cordova-Reid was brought down but it was too little, too late.

Leicester, the 2016 Premier League champions, remain just three points above the relegation zone.

Woman wins civil rape case against Conor McGregor

Published

on

A woman who accused Conor McGregor of raping her has won her claim against him for damages in a civil case.

A jury found that the Irish mixed martial arts fighter assaulted Nikita Hand in a Dublin hotel in December 2018.

He has been ordered to pay her more than €248,000 (£206,000) in damages.

Speaking outside the court on Friday, Ms Hand said her story was “a reminder that no matter how afraid you might be to speak up, you have a voice”.

In a post on X on Friday evening, McGregor said he would appeal against the verdict and he thanked “all my support worldwide”.

“I am with my family now, focused on my future” he added.

Nikita Hand said she was “overwhelmed” by support after taking the case against McGregor

The jury at the High Court in Dublin had been deliberating for a day before returning its verdict that McGregor did assault Ms Hand.

She had also taken a case against another man, James Lawrence, 35, of Rafter’s Road, Drimnagh in Dublin.

She alleged that he assaulted her by having sex with her without her consent in the Beacon Hotel.

The jury found that he did not assault her.

‘Justice will be served’

Ms Hand told reporters said she was “overwhelmed and touched” by the support she had received.

She added: “I want to show [my daughter] Freya and every other young girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and that justice will be served.”

Both men had denied the claims by the 35-year-old hair colourist and said they separately had consensual sex with Ms Hand at the hotel almost six years ago.

After eight days of evidence and three days listening to closing speeches and the judge’s comments, the jury of eight women and four men spent six hours and 10 minutes deliberating before returning with its verdict.

McGregor shook his head after the jury read out that Ms Hand had won her case against him.

He was accompanied by his partner Dee Devlin, his parents, his sister and his brother-in-law.

He sat in the back row of the court, between his partner and mother Margaret.

Ms Hand cried and was hugged by her partner and supporters.

The jury had previously heard that on the day of the attack Ms Hand and her colleague Danielle Kealy went to the hotel’s penthouse suite with McGregor and Mr Lawrence after their work Christmas party.

They gave evidence of how they had been partying all night from 8 December into the morning of 9 December and had been heavily drinking and taking cocaine.

‘Placed in a chokehold’

Ms Hand, a mother-of-one, told the court how McGregor had pinned her to a bed before assaulting her.

She was left with extensive bruises and abrasions over her body, including on her hands and wrists.

There was a bloodied scratch on her breast and tenderness on her neck after she said she was placed in a “chokehold” by McGregor.

He denied causing the bruising, saying it could have happened after she “swan dived” into the bath in the hotel room.

Ms Hand was taken in an ambulance to the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin the next day where she was assessed in the sexual assault treatment unit.

A paramedic who examined Ms Hand told the court that she had not seen “someone so bruised” in a long time.

The jury had been told how Ms Hand had to leave her job as a hairdresser and has not been able to work since due to her mental health, that her relationship with her partner ended months after the incident, that she had to move out of her home in Drimnagh and that her mortgage was now in arrears.

She also said she had to stop seeing a counsellor because she could no longer afford to pay for the sessions.

The court heard that she had spent more than €4,000 (£3,326) on GP, pharmacy and psychotherapy costs.
