‘Side Chick’, Family Members Allegedly Attack Lover’s Wife
A side chick identified as Falamata Mai Mele and her family members allegedly attacked her lover’s wife after she caught them on their matrimonial bed in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who confirmed the incident on Saturday, April 13, 2024, said it happened during the month of Ramadan.
Side chick and her family members allegedly attack lover
According to the housewife, Aisha Bukar Gambo, she went to confront the side chick in her house which resulted in an altercation with some members of the suspect’s family.
During the altercation, the side chick, Falamata Mai Mele allegedly stabbed Aisha with a screwdriver on the side of her left breast, leaving her in the pool of her blood.
Zagazola Makama wrote: “In the most-irritating audacity, the side chick, Falamata Mai Mele stabbed Aisha with a screwdriver on the side of her left breast and left her in the pool of her blood.
“How else could one describe a situation where a wife catches her husband on her matrimonial bed committing adultery with another woman, but instead of the adulterers to most-passionately seek her forgiveness, and also plead with her to conceal the matter from public knowledge, they punished her severely for taking actions she deemed appropriate?,’
“The entire drama unfolded in, and stinked of the most nauseating audacity, most especially as it was staged during the Holy month of Ramadan, and the nauseating act was committed by Muslims who should have, instead of committing one of the gravest sins, strove for the spiritual purification and rebirth the Ramadan fast offers.
“A wife called Aisha Bukar Gambo, in Gubio town, Gubio LGA, Borno State, on a day during the just-ended month of Ramadan, caught her husband pestle in the mortar with another woman on her matrimonial bed.
“Devastated Aisha immediately reported the matter to her father who pleaded with her to conceal the matter from public knowledge, and urged her to return to her matrimonial home. As an obedient daughter, she did.
“However, again on the 27th day of Ramadan, which is the night every fasting Muslim expects to achieve the peak of blessings from Allah, Aisha caught him in a nauseating act with another woman.
“She then, most startlingly, called neighbors and passers-by to witness the act, before she, again, reported the matter to her father. Aisha was further urged to return to her husband and, once again, conceal it from the public and let peace reign.
“Normally, Aisha would expect her husband and the woman to seek her forgiveness, and even placate her with whatever they could afford to ensure she concealed the matter.
“But in sharp contrast to that, however, the adulterous woman and her husband’s relatives mobilized and challenged her for exposing her husband to the point of calling witnesses.
“Tired of what was going on, Aisha Bukar Gambo, confronted the side chick, Yakolo Babagana in her family house which resulted in some altercation with some members of Mai Mele’s Family in gubio.
“In the most-irritating audacity, the side chick, Falamata Mai Mele stabbed Aisha with a screwdriver on the side of her left breast and left her in the pool of her blood, perhaps intent on killing her.
“Aisha’s father, Bukar Gambi, rushed to the police to come to the aid of his daughter after the side chick’s family brought more dangerous weapons.”
The Police Divisional Officer of Gubio, who confirmed the incident, said the suspects have been arrested.
“On 11/04/2024 at about 2000hrs, one Bukar Gambi of Education Department in Gubio LGA came to police came to police and reported that on the same date at about 1930 hourz, his daughter Aisha Bukar Gambo had some altercation with some members of Mai Mele’s Family in Gubio that during the fracas one Falamata Mai Mele stabbed Aisha with a screwdriver on the side of her left breast,” the officer stated.
“During arrest members of the Mai Mele’s family were brandishing knives and cutlasses until the support of the military was sought, which led to the arrest and detention of some of the suspects, as well as the principal suspects Yakolo Babagana Mai Mele.
“Two cutlasses were recovered as exhibits while the victim was admitted at the Primary Health Care Center Gubio for Medical Attention while investigation is ongoing.”

Civil Society Groups Urge FG To Halt Oil Asset Divestments in Niger Delta
The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has called on President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to stop all ongoing and planned divestments of oil assets in the Niger Delta region by oil companies.
This demand was outlined in a petition titled “Urgent Call to Halt All Divestment in the Niger Delta, Including Shell’s Refused Sale of SPDC Shares”, addressed to President Tinubu on December 16, 2024, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas on December 18, 2024.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Mr. Isaac Botti, Programmes Coordinator of Social Action Nigeria, and Reverend Nnimmo Bassey, Founder of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), highlighted the severe environmental and social impacts of oil exploration in the Niger Delta. They stated:
“We are here as representatives of Nigerian society organizations, community leaders, and concerned citizens to address a grave and urgent issue that threatens not only the people of the Niger Delta but the environmental and economic interests of Nigeria and the social future of all Nigerians”, he said.
The Coalition expressed concern over the divestment process by International Oil Companies (IOCs), particularly Shell’s proposed sale of its remaining shares in the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to the Renaissance consortium, as well as similar moves by companies like TotalEnergies.
They warned that these actions could undermine national interests and exacerbate environmental damage in the region.
The Coalition detailed extensive damage caused by decades of oil exploration, including:
- Water Contamination: High levels of hydrocarbons in water sources have rendered them unsafe for drinking.
- Soil Degradation: Continuous oil spills have destroyed farmlands, threatening food security.
- Biodiversity Loss: Entire ecosystems have been decimated by oil spills.
Citing reports by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Bayelsa State Oil and Environment Commission (BSOEC), the Coalition provided alarming statistics. UNEP revealed benzene levels 900 times above safe limits in Ogoniland, while chromium levels in Bayelsa were over 1,000 times higher than World Health Organization (WHO) standards.
The BSOEC estimated it would cost at least $12 billion to remediate Bayelsa over 12 years, with a broader cleanup across the Niger Delta requiring $100 billion. Comparatively, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the U.S. saw BP pay $60 billion for damages from a single incident.
The Coalition emphasized that past divestments by Shell, ENI/AGIP, and ExxonMobil have left unresolved environmental liabilities:
- Shell’s sale to Aiteo in Nembe resulted in worsening pollution without proper cleanup efforts.
- ExxonMobil and ENI/AGIP similarly failed to ensure adequate environmental management post-divestment.
These cases have set a troubling precedent of IOCs avoiding accountability for environmental degradation.
The Coalition urged the federal government and the National Assembly to take immediate action by:
- Halting all IOC divestments until historical environmental liabilities are addressed.
- Ensuring inclusive consultations with host communities before divestments.
- Mandating that Shell, TotalEnergies, and other IOCs fund cleanup and remediation efforts.
- Upholding the regulatory independence of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
- Creating an Environmental Restoration Fund to support long-term remediation.
They also demanded profit-sharing opportunities for host communities and the inclusion of gas flaring cessation in divestment agreements.
The Coalition stressed that approving Shell’s SPDC share sale without addressing environmental and social liabilities would undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and well-being.
“Approving Shell’s or TotalEnergies’ divestment in its current form without addressing the profound environmental and social costs would be a grave injustice to the people of the Niger Delta and could lead to significant unrest in the region.”, it stated.
The Coalition reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring environmental justice and called on President Tinubu and the National Assembly to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians over corporate interests.
