Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has called for calm after Nigeria’s less-than-stellar opening victory against Tanzania at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), insisting that the most important objective, which is three vital points, has been achieved.

Ndidi acknowledged the familiar challenges that come with the first game of a major tournament, describing it as a test of rhythm, fitness, and mentality.

“It was a good game,” the midfielder said after the Super Eagles soared past the Taifa Stars on Tuesday.

“First game of a tournament is always like this, getting the momentum and all, but it was really, really good. We got the three points, which is the most important.”

Nigeria dominated much of the first half in the 2-1 win, setting the tempo and showing glimpses of the attacking intent expected of them.

However, the second half proved more demanding, with the Super Eagles coming under pressure and struggling to maintain their earlier control. But Nigeria’s quality proved decisive on the night and ensured the three-time African champions took all three points at stake.

Ndidi was candid in his assessment of the game, admitting that the performance dipped after the break, but praised the team’s reaction.

“The first half was good, the pace was good. In the second half, maybe we were a bit tired or something. It didn’t go well, but we reacted very, very well. I’m proud of the team,” the Besiktas midfielder said

With Nigeria now recording 13 consecutive matches without a clean sheet, questions have been raised about the team’s defensive solidity. But the former Leicester City star has dismissed any sense of panic.

“I’m not worried at all,” Ndidi said firmly. “We got the three points. That’s important.”

When asked whether he believes the current team can match or even surpass Nigeria’s runners-up feat at the 2023 AFCON, Ndidi was optimistic.

“Everything is possible,” he said.

It is an unlucky Sunday for two National teams of Nigeria, the Super Falcons fell to Cameroon just as Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been knocked out of the race for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship.

The defeat at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, also ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The WAFU Zone B final carried added importance, as the winner was guaranteed a place at the 2027 U-20 AFCON, which will serve as the qualifying tournament for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

With Burkina Faso emerging victorious, the Young Stallions secured the region’s ticket, while Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the global youth tournament came to an end.

Burkina Faso took control of the final from the opening whistle, scoring three goals within the first 15 minutes and leaving the Flying Eagles with a huge deficit.

Nigeria struggled to contain the Young Stallings’ attacking pressure and could not recover from the early setback before the break.

Coach Abdu Maikaba’s side attempted to fight back after the interval but failed to produce the response required to turn the game around.

Burkina Faso eventually added another goal to complete a convincing 4-1 victory, while Nigeria’s consolation effort was not enough to change the outcome.

The result was particularly painful for the Flying Eagles after Burkina Faso had already defeated them 2-0 during the group stage.

Nigeria had hoped to avenge that earlier loss in the final but instead suffered another defeat to the Young Stallions when the stakes were highest.

The Flying Eagles had reached the final after overcoming Côte d’Ivoire in a dramatic semi-final.
