Tragedy struck on Monday along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway as world heavyweight boxing star, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a fatal road accident in Ogun State that claimed the lives of two persons.
The accident reportedly occurred at Makun area of Ogun State, near Danco Filling Station, just before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane of the expressway.
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, often plagued by heavy traffic, broken-down vehicles, and frequent accidents.
According to eyewitness accounts, Anthony Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck parked along the roadside. The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are still unclear, but preliminary information suggests that the impact was severe, resulting in instant fatalities.
A member of the rescue team and eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, confirmed the incident and provided details of the aftermath. Speaking to reporters at the scene, Orojo said the accident happened suddenly and left little room for survival for some of the occupants.
“The accident happened along the busy expressway shortly before the Sagamu Interchange.
Unfortunately, two people lost their lives instantly. Anthony Joshua was rescued from the wreckage with minor injuries,” Orojo said.
He added that emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and worked to rescue those trapped in the vehicle.
Joshua was said to have been swiftly removed from the wreckage and given immediate medical attention.
Sources at the scene disclosed that the truck involved in the collision was parked by the roadside at the time of the accident, raising fresh concerns over the dangers posed by improperly parked heavy-duty vehicles on major highways. Road safety experts have repeatedly warned that abandoned or poorly marked trucks remain a leading cause of fatal accidents on Nigerian roads. Although Anthony Joshua reportedly sustained minor injuries, the deaths of two occupants have cast a shadow over the incident, sparking widespread reactions both locally and internationally. News of the crash spread rapidly, prompting fans of the boxing champion to flood social media with messages of concern, prayers, and condolences for the victims and their families.
Many fans expressed relief that Joshua survived the accident, while also calling for improved road safety measures on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which has recorded numerous deadly crashes over the years. As of the time of filing this report, official authorities have commenced investigations into the cause of the accident.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) is expected to play a key role in determining whether factors such as speeding, poor visibility, mechanical failure, or improper parking contributed to the crash. Efforts to obtain an official statement from the TRACE Commandant, Akinbiyi Babatunde, were unsuccessful, as calls placed to his phone were not returned.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were also reportedly at the scene to manage traffic and document the incident. The accident has once again highlighted ongoing concerns about road safety in Nigeria, particularly on major highways where broken-down vehicles and trucks are often left without adequate warning signs.
Anthony Joshua, a former unified world heavyweight champion and one of boxing’s most recognisable figures, has not yet made a public statement regarding the incident.
His management team is also yet to release an official update on his condition or comment on the fatalities.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue and more details emerge regarding the circumstances of the crash.
