Israel has launched in what it described as a sweeping “pre-emptive attack” against Iran, unleashing multiple airstrikes that triggered explosions in Tehran and prompted Israeli authorities to declare a nationwide state of emergency.
The dramatic escalation marks one of the most significant confrontations between the long-time regional adversaries in recent months and has heightened fears of a broader Middle East conflict.
In an official statement released early Saturday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced the imposition of a “special and permanent state of emergency” across the country, citing immediate security threats following the military operation.
Shortly afterward, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that it had initiated what it characterized as a targeted and pre-emptive strike on Iranian positions. Though Israeli authorities did not disclose specific targets, the move was framed as a necessary action to neutralize imminent threats.
Emergency Measures Across Israel
Following the announcement, the IDF implemented sweeping security restrictions nationwide. Educational institutions were ordered closed, public gatherings were banned, and non-essential workplaces were suspended. Only critical sectors, including healthcare, security, and emergency services, were permitted to operate.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Israeli military urged citizens to remain vigilant and stay close to protected spaces.
This is a proactive alert to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward the State of Israel,” the military said, warning of potential retaliatory action from Tehran.
Air raid sirens reportedly sounded across multiple Israeli cities, while emergency alerts were pushed directly to mobile devices, advising residents to seek shelter and remain in close proximity to safe rooms and bomb shelters.
The measures reflect deep concerns within Israeli security circles that Iran could respond swiftly and forcefully, as it has pledged in past confrontations.
Explosions Rock Tehran
In Iran, local media outlets reported multiple explosions in the capital city, Tehran, early Saturday morning. At least three blasts were heard in downtown areas, according to eyewitness accounts carried by state-affiliated media.
The semi-official Fars News Agency reported that several missiles struck the Republic district of Tehran, a central area of the capital. However, Iranian authorities had not, as of press time, released any official assessment regarding casualties or the extent of damage.
Video footage circulating online appeared to show plumes of smoke rising from parts of the city, though the authenticity of the clips had not been independently verified.
Iran’s government has yet to issue a comprehensive response, but officials are expected to address the nation as security assessments continue.
A Fragile Calm Shattered
Saturday’s strike comes less than a year after direct hostilities between the two nations in June 2025, when tit-for-tat attacks marked one of the most dangerous standoffs in recent history.
