Nollywood: YouTube not going to last as platform in Nigeria – Kanayo Kanayo
Hy Francesca Hangeior
Nollywood actor Kanayo O Kanayo has expressed concerns regarding the proliferation of Nigerian actors and producers on YouTube.
He noted that the prevalent practice of conducting intense one-day shoots among up-and-coming actors on YouTube was detrimental to professionalism and long-term sustainability.
In a video shared on Instagram, Kanayo criticised the trend of charging exorbitant fees for single-day shoots, where actors are expected to complete numerous scenes within a limited timeframe.
He said that such demanding working conditions could affect the health of actors.
Kanayo emphasised the lack of foresight and professionalism among Nigerian actors who prioritise short-term gains over sustainable practices.
Kanayo concluded by stating his belief that YouTube’s presence in Nigeria might diminish if its platform continues to be used in this manner.
He said, ‘’We built Nollywood, brick by brick, block by block but the guys who have besieged YouTube, the actors not the producers, do not have any sense of purpose or process to create a procedure for a lasting videography or creating content.
“Take, for instance, the whole irony of a one-day shoot. It is not sustainable. Some of them now make it so difficult for producers. They tell you a day shoot is N1 million or N1.5 million. It isn’t sustainable.
“Unfortunately, my very high-standing colleague who started this one-day shoot is unfortunately not in good health. Why? I know for everyone who gives you a job, wants it done. They pack you with enough to finish in one day. Thirty scenes, thirty-five scenes.
“Most of you think you are enjoying ‘I am fully booked for the next six months’ but your health…I hope you enjoy good health like those of us who started 38 years ago because what you are doing is not sustainable.
“I bear you no malice. Earn all your money but the disservice you are doing to professionalism is not going to last long and the way I see it. YouTube is not going to last long in Nigeria as a platform.”

Edo guber: LP’s Akpata remains a front runner, set to capture Edo
By Kayode Sanni-Arewa
Less than twenty-four hours to the start of voting in Saturday’s governorship poll in Edo State, a rash of fake news has broken out.
Leading parties in the election have had their fair shares of fake news either indicating the withdrawal of their candidates or disqualification by a Magistrate Court or Supreme Court.
For instance, Olumide Akpata of LP was said to have withdrawn from the race and thrown his support for Asue Ighodalo in a statement that read smoothly and appeared convincing.
THE CONCLAVE sent the statement to Akpata via WhatsApp for confirmed.
He responded by sending the same statement with FAKE NEWS boldly stamped on it.
He said he was set for victory at the poll.
There was also a news flash about the Supreme Court disqualifying Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, with a sign off: More details coming….
A Magistrate Court in Abuja was also reported to have disqualified Monday Okpebholo of the APC from the poll on account of age falsification.
The APC campaign organisation had swiftly put a lie to the report by deploying the court papers in the circumstance.
