Favour Ugwuka, a final-year student of Ebonyi State University in Abakaliki (EBSU), has committed suicide after she was said to have repeatedly failed a course.
Ugwuka was said to have taken her life in her hostel at the Ishieke campus on Wednesday night.

The Department of English student was said to have passed all her courses but repeatedly failed one subject over alleged threats by the course lecturer.

In a now-viral video, a woman called out the school authorities, claiming her daughter was frustrated by one of their lecturers.

The video was also accompanied by a voice note purported to be from the deceased wherein she vented her frustration with the lecturer.

“The lecturer said he is the best that nobody can teach like him. He should come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide,” the woman said.

Josh Ukandu, the Ebonyi state police spokesperson, confirmed the student’s demise on Friday.

“I do not know the details of what led to whatever. As of now, it is just a reported suicide case. We cannot even say conclusively what it is. We just got the report that the student committed suicide,” he said.

“What I am saying is, we got a report of a suicide. So I cannot say the reasons behind it. I cannot even say whether it is a suicide or not. As you said, a lot of things are flying online with regard to the issue. The report was that somebody committed suicide, a girl and a student of Ebonyi State University.”

The PRO said if the family of the deceased “suspects something,” they should report it to the police for investigation.

“I cannot confirm that. The report came as a suicide and of course, if the report comes as a suicide there is nothing to investigate. So, now it behooves the family of the person who committed suicide, maybe say that ‘we are suspecting something’ which will now lead to the investigation. Probably they have come now, but the report I only saw was the suicide,” he added.

“I do not have any interface with the people that gave the report. Whether anybody has come to now say they think it is not suicide but something else.”

The former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fanikayode has confirmed the death of his Special Assistant, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, who according to reports, slumped and died in an Abuja hotel.

In an announcement posted on his X formerly Twitter handle the former Minister while mourning the death of the man said the police have started investigation into the incident while the hotel has been sealed up and that he will ensure that justice is done and what led to his death unravelled.

According to his statement; “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my devoted Special Assistant, Mr. Ndifreke Saviour Mark, who was with me for no less than 34 years.

He left home at 5.40am on the morning of Sunday 13th October for morning Mass as he was a devoted Catholic and member of the Catholic Church of Assumption, Asokoro after which he went to a hotel by the name of Mildy Lodge and Apartments in Garki, Abuja.

According to the police he took a room at the hotel and spent some time there with an individual after which he apparently slumped and died in that individual’s presence.

He was taken to Asokoro District Hospital, was pronounced dead upon arrival and has since been put in the hospital morgue.

The individual he was with at the time of his death in the hotel is now in police custody and I have insisted on a full criminal investigation of the matter and an autopsy.

The hotel receptionist has also been detained by the police whilst both the manager and the owner of the hotel were invited for questioning earlier this week.

The entire hotel was also sealed up by the police for two days and the room in which he lodged remains sealed till today. I have broken the sad news to his family, I have met with his wife Barrister Patience Ndifreke-Mark and his Uncle, Mr. Clement Mathias, (who represented his family) and I have also told them of my intention to ensure that, if indeed there is any foul play, justice is done and those behind it are brought to book.

Mark was like a son to me and his passing is a huge blow to me and my entire family. We shared many dreams and aspirations and fought many battles together shoulder to shoulder.

Now he has gone it has left much pain but I give thanks to God for his life and for the 52 years that he spent on earth. I have assured his wife and family of my intention to stand by them at this difficult time and to ensure that they do not lack or want for anything.

I have absolute confidence in the FCT Police Command to get to the bottom of this matter after which we can proceed to bury a man that was my most loyal staff and most trusted aide.

Most important of all is the fact that he was a kind, reliable and compassionate soul who brought joy to many and who was incapable of hurting a fly.

I will never forget him and though he has passed he lives on in our hearts. I thank all those that have found the time to come and mourn with us at this difficult time.

May Ndifreke’s precious soul rest in peace and may the Lord comfort his wife and two beautiful young children.

“The agency is committed to enforcing building safety standards across the state, and residents should comply with evacuation orders to avoid any casualty.”

Gunmen invade Rivers community, kill four

Published

Gunmen suspected to be cultists invaded the Edeoha community in Aboada East Local Government Area of Rivers State and killed four residents early Sunday.

It was gathered that the assailants suspected to be members of the Iceland cult group, stormed the community at about 2 am on Sunday with sophisticated weapons, shooting sporadically.

It was further gathered that the gunmen went from house to house in search of their targets as residents scampered for safety for fear of being hit by a stray bullet.

A source in the community who pleaded anonymity said the reason behind the attack was unknown.

He stated, “The whole community was in confusion when they came and started shooting. Three of those killed are natives of Edeoha while the other one is a native of the Ekata community still in Aboada East LGA but resides in Edeoha.

“The suspected Iceland cult members who carried out the killing came from a camp in a neighbouring community to carry out the overnight killing at Edeoha.

“The people killed are not cult members but the attack is believed to have been carried out by cultists who may have been paid to eliminate the four residents over some unclear issues.”

Checks by our reporter indicate that the Edeoha community is accessible by road from the Nbaima-Ahoada highway and is also surrounded by creeks and rivers which hoodlums sometimes take advantage of.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying an investigation is ongoing.

“Yes, I can confirm. It is cult related.

“The Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Mustapha, has directed the Ahoada Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer to commence investigation into the incident to apprehend the perpetrators and make them face justice,” she stated.
