Why Tinubu sacked Arase as PSC chairman
Dr Solomon Arase, the Chairman of Police Service Commission, PSC, until Monday, might have been booted out of office for his strong resistance to tenure extension of some top police officers whose performances have been poor and abysmal.
A source close to the seat of power in Abuja revealed that these elements in the force, even as Arase who barely spent one year out of a four-year tenure, has never exposed their inadequacies, have become envious of Arase unparalleled performance.
The ambitious top police officers who are due for retirement this year have been fighting teeth and nails to secure extension of their services even when they have not performed optimally in crime and security issues.
The source said: “Arase might not be favourable to the decision to extend tenure of the top officers when proposal to do so lands on his table, so he has to give way.
“Reading from his body language, he would simply note, this is a dangerous precedence in the Nigeria Police Force”.
President Bola Tinubu, Monday removed Arase, as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and appointed Hashimu Argungu, a retired police officer to replace him.
A presidential spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, announced the removal and new appointment in a terse statement released on Monday, dislosing no reason for the change of guard in the PSC.
