Congestion: FG begins audit of prison inmates
By Kayode Sanni-Arewa
The Federal Government s
ays it has commenced the audit of inmates across its 256 Custodial Centres in the country, with a view to decongesting the facilities.
Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed this after undertaking an inspection of the ongoing 3,000-capacity Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Janguza, Kano State as well as the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja.
Asked about the audit of inmates, he said; “That is ongoing but the good thing for me is that we did facility audit earlier and we can see that the result of the facility audit is how we are intervening. So, we are very empirical and scientific in our approach. We don’t just throw solutions to problems that are unknown. We discover the problems, we know the root cause of issues, then we find solutions to them.
So, the audit system is being empirical. It is scientific and that will lead massively to the decongestion of our Custodial Centres. It is not just saying you want to decongest. It is about you knowing the status. Life is all about data. Data is the new oil. Data is the blood of life in this millennium. The audit is going on and by the time we are done with the audit, you will see the level of decongestion that we will have as a result of the audit. So, we are just being empirical”
At the Kuje facility, the minister got a gift of three books authored by one of the inmates who had been in custody for the past 12 years.
Tunji-Ojo who was elated, said the facilities are no longer prison but correctional centres for reforming the legally interned.
He said; “We were in Kano to see the 3,000-capacity Maximum Security Custodial Centre, which of course, is work in progress. It is about the intervention of the Administration in terms of our Custodial Centres and I can tell you that work is still going on. We are not where we want to be but obviously, we are not where we were. So, it is work in progress basically.”
“The Correctional Service is one that needs intervention and the government is doing everything because we know we have to put in all the efforts to make sure that we are able to offer solutions to most of these problems.
“Do not forget that a lot of these centres were built under the Colonial era. Some of these facilities are 60 to over 100 years old. So, President Tinubu did not become president a hundred years ago but he understands that he is president and he is intervening so that he won’t hand over a defective system to the next generation”, he added.

Tinubu, Lagos meddling in Kano’s affairs — Kwankwaso
The leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has raised concerns over the Tinubu government’s preference for Lagos State against other states of the federation.
To this end, Kwankwaso accused Lagos of attempting to dominate other regions in the country, particularly Kano, because of the overwhelming support it receives from the central government.
Kwankwaso alleged that Lagos is meddling in Kano’s internal matters, including the selection of its emir.
He made the claims during a speech at the convocation ceremony of Skyline University in Kano on Sunday.
“Today, we can see very clearly that there are significant efforts from the Lagos axis to colonise this part of the country. Lagos wouldn’t allow us to choose even our Emir; instead, they want to impose their own Emir on Kano,” he stated.
Kwankwaso, whose main target was President Tinubu, said further: “Lagos today feel they only are Nigeria, interfering in other states’ affairs. We will not tolerate such actions here in Kano.”
Kwankwaso’s comments reflected deeper concerns about the alleged regional imbalance in governance and traditional institutions, particularly under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Many believe that the administration of President Tinubu has given more attention to Lagos State, with trillions of naira projects being awarded to the state to the detriment of other states.

Saboteurs Frustrating Efforts to End Insurgency – CDS Musa
The Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Gen. Christopher Musa, has accused some individuals of frustrating the Nigerian government’s efforts to end insurgency in the country.
Musa, who spoke in Abuja on Saturday, after receiving 58 rescued kidnapped victims from the National Security Adviser, NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, assured that the individuals who are frustrating the campaign against terror would not be allowed to have their way.
He said, “You can see from the people, the women, the children, both girls and boys, and the little one.
“The question you want to ask is why would somebody kidnap these kinds of people? If you see them, they are barely just surviving.”
The defence chief stated that contrary to the belief of many Nigerians, not all who are involved in banditry joined willingly. According to him, some of them were conscripted.
He assured that the troops would ensure that the perpetrators face the wrath of the law.
The CDS said that they military is going after the perpetrators.
“For the innocent blood they have spilled, for those they have restricted their freedom, the security personnel will get back at them, and they will face the law,” he added.
Musa further explained that no ransom was paid to free the victims, and appealed to citizens to give the security agencies the needed support in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
“It’s a joint effort. We’re able to do that through non-kinetic means of getting across. No penny was paid for these individuals.”
The National Coordinator, National Counter Terrorism Center, Maj Gen Adamu Laka, while speaking, stated that preliminary investigation had revealed that the victims were kidnapped by armed bandits under the command of a notorious terrorist, Janbros.
Laka explained that during the kidnap, the victims were made to trek for hundreds of kilometres to the thick forest of Birnin Gwari.
He pointed out that the government provided them with all the necessary assistance required to stabilise them, for subsequent handing over to the NSA for rehabilitation and immediate medical checkups.
Six of the rescued victims were admitted in hospital, he added.
Laka further explained that the six admitted victims have recovered and joined others for subsequent handing over to their respective families.
The Chief of Staff to Kaduna State Governor, Sani Limankila called on all Nigerians to team up with the security agencies to end kidnapping.
The victims were kidnapped from their homes and farmlands in Gayam, Sabon Layi and Kwaga villages of Dan Musa LGA of Katsina State.
Comprising 35 males and 23 females, they were rescued on November 14 by troops of 1 Division of the Nigerian Army.

Gunmen abduct NDLEA officer, orderly in Delta
A senior officer of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and his orderly have been abducted by gunmen near the agency’s head office along the Isah-Ogwashi-Uku Road in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8:00 pm on Friday as the officer was heading home after work.
Eyewitnesses stated that the assailants ambushed their victims, forcing them into an unmarked vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Speaking on the incident, a source close to the agency said, “It seems like the kidnappers had prior knowledge of the officer’s movements. The ambush was well-coordinated, suggesting they might have been tracking him for some time.”
This abduction is the latest in a spate of kidnappings in Ogwashi-Uku, with five reported cases in the past 10 days.
In one of the most recent incidents, two youths were shot dead while two others were abducted along the Edo-Otulu Road in Agidiase Quarters.
Residents of Ogwashi-Uku have expressed fear and frustration over the growing insecurity.
“We are no longer safe in our own community. The government must act swiftly to address this menace before more lives are lost,” a local leader, who pleaded for anonymity, lamented.
Security sources believe the kidnappers may be operating with insider information, as they have consistently altered their patterns to avoid being apprehended.
“The criminals seem to have an informant who keeps them ahead of security agencies,” a source said.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the NDLEA Delta State Command, Mr. John Kennedy, refused to comment on the matter.
It was learnt that efforts were ongoing to locate the abducted officer and his orderly, as the community calls for increased security presence to curb the rising wave of the violent crime.
