Two ‘Kano Emirs’ Sanusi, Bayero Lead Friday Congregation Prayers At Different Mosques Amid Court Ruling
The 15th and 16th Emirs of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero and Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Friday held court sittings in their separate palaces.
The two Emirs also observed the Friday congregation prayers at the Central mosque and the Nassarawa mini palace respectively, according to Daily Trust.
SaharaReporters had reported that a Federal High Court sitting in Kano State on Thursday invalidated all actions taken by the Kano State government to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law 2024.
In the ruling delivered, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman, overturned the actions of the Kano government and directed all parties to maintain the status quo ante.
SaharaReporters also reported that the Kano State Government had directed the state police command to remove the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, from the royal residence.
According to the order, the action would pave the way for an extensive reconstruction and renovation project, which includes the demolition and rebuilding of the palace’s dilapidated wall fence.
The governor gave the directive on Thursday night, at a press conference, through the state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi, who stated that the abolishment of the five emirates created in 2019 is validated.
Dederi had said, “I want to congratulate and call on the good people of Kano State to remain peaceful and celebrate the success of the people without any hitch. May Allah SWT continue to protect our State and our government.
“You will recall that at our last press briefing, we had informed you that we would keep you posted relating to any further development in respect of our emirate cases. Today, 20th June, 2024, the Federal High Court No. 1, Kano had passed its ruling in respect of the case before it.
“I have the honour, on behalf of His Excellency Gov. Abba K. Yusuf and the Kano State Government, to address you once again over the lingering litigation arising from the abolishing of the Five (5) emirates and deposition of the former emirs (including the deposed emir of 8 metropolitan local governments).”
“The Kano State Government acknowledges the ruling by the Federal High Court regarding the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law, 2024 and views same as upholding the rule of law,” the AG explained.
He said by the ruling of the court, “It had unequivocally reaffirmed the validity of the law passed by Kano State House of Assembly and assented to by His Excellency the Executive Governor of Kano State on Thursday 23rd May, 2024 by 5:10 pm”.
According to him, “this part of the judgement is very fundamental to the entire matter.
“Further implication of the ruling is that all actions done by the Government before the emergence of the interim order of the honorable Court, are equally validated. This means that, the abolishing of the five emirates created in 2019 is validated and the deposition of the five emirs is also sustained by the Federal High Court.
“By implication this means that Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the emir of Kano. The judge also granted our application for the stay of proceedings until the Court of Appeal deals with the appeal before it on jurisdiction.
“Happily, the signing of the law and the reinstatement of His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi ll were done on 23rd May, 2024 before the emergence of the Interim Order which was served on us on Monday 27th May, 2024.
“Following this court’s ruling, Kano State Government has directed the state Commissioner of Police to remove the deposed emir of the 8 metropolitan local governments from the government property, where arrangements have been concluded for the general reconstruction and renovation of the property including the demolishing and reconstruction of the dilapidated wall fence with immediate effect.
“I want to congratulate and call on the good people of Kano State to remain peaceful and celebrate the success of the people without any hitch. May Allah SWT continue to protect our State and our government,” he added.
A motor accident has claimed the lives of three children of Professor Yusuf Attahir Baba, the former provost of the American University of Nigeria, AUN, also known as ABTI American University Nigeria, in Yola, Adamawa State.
The tragic incident, which occurred Friday night, has left the academic community and the nation in mourning.
Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, who founded AUN, has expressed shock over the tragic incident.
In a statement, he said, “It is with a heavy heart that I condole with the family of Professor Yusuf Attahir Baba, former provost of the American University of Nigeria, on the loss of three children in a ghastly motor accident last night.”
According to him, “It is my wish that we put the family in our prayers at this difficult time, for Allah to comfort them and accept the return of the departed souls. Amin.”
Professor Baba, a respected academic and administrator, previously served as the provost of AUN, an institution renowned as Africa’s first development university.
The loss of his children has sparked an outpouring of condolences from colleagues, students, and the wider community, who are rallying to support the grieving family during the unimaginable tragedy.
A young girl identified as Onyinye and her mother have reportedly beaten her father to death.
The incident occurred along Urhobo Road in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State after the man questioned her daughter’s second pregnancy out of wedlock.
According to the report, the deceased, a commercial tricycle operator, was reprimanding his daughter for the second pregnancy when she became angry and pounced on, beating him to stupor.
Onyinye’s mother was said to have quickly locked the door, joining her daughter in assaulting the husband until he fell and hit his head on the ground.
He was reported to have died instantly, before neighbors could intervene and force the door open.
Sources in the area said residents raised an alarm, inviting the police, who arrested both the mother and daughter.
When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, claimed that the matter had not been reported.

The Embassy of China in Nigeria has pushed back against claims that visa delays were responsible for Nigerian athletes’ withdrawal from the upcoming World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China.
In response to reports and a public statement by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), which cited delays in visa processing as the reason for the country’s withdrawal from the event scheduled for May 10–11, the Chinese Embassy released a detailed clarification asserting that it acted swiftly and professionally to facilitate the process.
According to the Embassy, it received a formal request for visa support from Nigeria’s National Sports Commission on April 24—two weeks before the competition—following a letter dated April 22. The embassy stated that it immediately communicated with the Commission and provided guidance on required documentation.
The visa application materials were submitted to the China Visa Application Centre on May 6, the embassy noted. In response, it activated expedited procedures and completed visa issuance by May 8, just two days later.
“The Embassy of China in Nigeria has always actively supported people-to-people and sports cooperation between the two countries,” the statement read. “We have consistently assisted Nigerian citizens in visa applications in an efficient and professional manner.”
The Embassy also underscored that visa issuance is a matter of national sovereignty and requires applicants to follow standard procedures and timelines. It described the AFN’s statement as “clearly inconsistent with the facts.”
