The Acting Governor of Katsina State, Faruk Umar, has inaugurated a committee to investigate a viral video on social media showing the alleged torture of some individuals by the personnel of Hisbah.

Activities of Katsina State Hisbah Board were recently tagged by residents as anti-social and infringement of rights of people across the State.

Reports have it that on May 5, 2024, in the Katsina metropolis, a joint operation by Hisbah and Community Watch Corps at a wedding ceremony turned violent. The security forces fired shots into the crowd, resulting in the tragic death of Mallam Gambo Maipaci, a middle-aged vulcanizer.

An eyewitness, Mohammed Musa, told PUNCH Online that “immediately the Hisbah alongside CWC alighted, without much ado, they started shooting while those with knives too were seen chasing the crowd.

He said, “In the process, a bullet pierced through Mallam Gambo, the vulcaniser. They rushed him to a nearby hospital where he later died. Not only that, Hisbah has been infringing on our rights ever since its establishment by Radda’s administration.”

Inaugurating the committee on behalf of the acting Governor, Secretary to the Katsina State government, Abdullahi Faskari, read the terms of reference to include “investigate the veracity or otherwise of the viral video on the social media on alleged torture of individuals by personnel of Hisbah.

“Other allegations of victimisation and torture being perpetrated by the personnel of Hisbah; study the Law establishing HISBAH Board with a view to determining lapses (if any) leading to violations of fundamental human rights; identify Hisbah personnel who are involved in the act of victimisation and torture of people and recommend sanctions as appropriate.”

He said the committee will submit a report within 10 days from the date of inauguration of the Committee.

The Commissioner of Youth and Sports Development, Aliyu Zakari, will chair the committee, while others are Permanent Secretaries of Ministries of Religious Affairs, Justice, Internal Security and Home Affairs, among others.

Ondo guber: APC spent billions to buy votes, PDP agent alleges

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) State Collation Agent, Olaniyi Ogungbuji, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of inducing voters in the just concluded governorship election in Ondo State to the tune of over N35 billion.

He spoke shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
declared the APC candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, winner of the Saturday’s governorship election at the INEC headquarters in Akure.

The Returning Officer, Prof Olayemi Akinwunmi, declared Aiyedatiwa winner at exactly 2:29pm.

Aiyedatiwa polled 366,781 votes to defeat his major rival and the PDP candidate, Agboola Ajayi, who came distant second with 117,845 votes, while African Democratic Party’s Adeyemi Nejo came third with 4,138.

Speaking to newsmen after the declaration, Ogungbuji alleged that the ruling party won because it deployed over N35bn to induce voters.

“This is the end result of the election but I can tell you that APC as a party deployed over N35bn into inducing the electorate. And if this is the future of this nation, I think we are doomed for it,” he said.

He also expressed worry that the election didn’t take place at some polling units at Idanre LG but his position was discarded at the collation centre.

Ogungbuji hinted that the party’s candidate, Agboola Ajayi and the party would decide on the next line of action in the coming days.

“I will report back to him (Ajayi) and the party as well, they will take the next appropriate action in the next few days,” he said.

But the APC state agent, Ade Adeogun, dismissed the allegation of vote buying, describing it as flippant excuses.

“You need to understand that throughout this electioneering period, we even complained that Ondo State was over policed.

So, if they had any genuine evidence, which is why I mentioned cogent and verifiable reasons, they would have reported to the security agencies and those persons involved in votes buying or any inducement would have been arrested.

“Without evidence, you can’t just go around and make flippant excuses. They lost an election. They lost woefully and they’re looking for a straw to hold onto.”

He said the opposition party should be allowed to ‘weep’ over the defeat, saying the party has a right to do so.

Adeogun said, “It’s an allegation and when you go to court, he who alleges must prove. For you to prove, you must present cogent and verifiable reasons.

“If you have 10 political parties contesting and only one is complaining, you would understand that it’s a pain of loss that they’re still experiencing and we must give them that right to weep.

“If a child has failed an examination, he is allowed to weep. Let’s give them time to absorb the defeat and then probably accept the fact that they lost because they didn’t deserve to win.”

Chinese Student Kills Eight in stabbing Rampage After Failing Exam

A Chinese student killed eight people in a stabbing rampage because he was angry at failing an exam and not being paid enough as an intern, according to Chinese police.

The 21-year-old was arrested at the scene of the mass stabbing, the Wuxi Vocational College of Arts and Technology in Yixing city, Jiangsu province, eastern China. Police said he had confessed to the attack that took place on Saturday evening.

According to early investigations, the suspect vented his frustrations “after failing an exam and not receiving his graduation certificate, as well as being dissatisfied with his internship compensation”, the Yixing public security bureau said.

On Sunday, a mourner laid a bouquet of chrysanthemums among the floral tributes outside the school gates. “They were just 18, 19-year-old kids. It’s such a pity and so sad,” said the man, who gave his surname as Duan.

“We really have to give young people better psychological guidance,” he added.

The stabbings happened just a few days after China’s deadliest mass attack in 10 years – the ramming of an SUV into a crowd outside a sports facility in Zhuhai city in the south. That attack on Monday night killed 35 people and injured 43 others. On Saturday, a 62-year-old man was charged in connection with the incident.
