Telecoms workers threaten strike over anti-labour practices by Huawei, Safari Group, others

Telecommunication workers have issued a seven-day indefinite strike notice, effective September 9, to 39 companies including Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd. over what they describe as prevalent precarious working conditions.

The workers under the aegis of Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association (PTECSSAN) gave the notice in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Mr Okonu Abdullahi, on Tuesday.

Other companies, it issued notice to, are Tylium Nigeria Ltd; Specific Tool and Techniques; Safari Group Ltd. among others.

Abdullahi said that the strike had become necessary following alleged anti-labour practices including the refusal of the employers to recognise and respect the workers’ constitutional rights to freely associate with the union.

He alleged also that three members of the union were unjustly sacked.

“We shall not be suspending the planned indefinite strike action until our demands, which are as follows, are met:

“Immediate reinstatement of the three unjustly sacked workers: Sotola Sunday Kolawole, Ulu Ikechukwu Christopher and Alex Franklin C.

“Immediate recognition of the fundamental right of the employees to freely associate with the union, “ he said.

According to the general secretary, other demands include immediate recognition of the union as the negotiating body for the employees on workers welfare.

He said also that the union was demanding the immediate remittance of membership dues into its account as earlier provided, among others.

“We hope that these companies will utilise the seven-day window of this notice to meet our demands and avert the indefinite strike action,” Abdullahi said.

Pastor Adeboye rejects living beyond a century

Published

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has narrated his thoughts on how long he wants to live on earth, revealing that he outrightly rejected prayers for an extended lifespan beyond 100.

Speaking during a sermon, the revered cleric recalled how some of his followers prayed for him to live to different ages.

He said when they prayed for him to reach 80 years, he responded with a hearty “Amen.”

The pastor humorously recalled an instance where a woman, in her enthusiasm, prayed that he should live up to 140 years.

Reacting to the prayer, Adeboye said he completely rejected the idea, emphasizing that the world is filled with troubles.

“When I was 70 years old, some children of mine began to pray for me. And they said, ‘Daddy, you will live to be 80,’ I said Amen. ‘You will live to be 90,’ I said Amen. They said, ‘You will live to be 100,’ I didn’t answer them.

“And then one fellow got excited and said, ‘You will live to be 120,’ I said na lie! What will God say I have done wrong? I have been here for 70 years, He will now keep me here for another 50 years? In this world?

“Where today you have electricity, tomorrow you don’t have? But there was one lady who got really excited, and said, ‘You will live to be 140,’ I said no be me.”
