Man bags 8 years imprisonment for land fraud
An Ikeja Special Offences Court, on Wednesday, sentenced a man Abodurin Abozo to eight years imprisonment for defrauding a man of N62 million on the pretext of procuring him two plots of land.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Ismail Ijelu held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) proved the two-count charge of obtaining by false pretences and stealing against Abozo.
Ijelu held that the convict obtained the sum of N56 million from the complainant, one Mr Samuel Segher, with the assurance of procuring two plots of land for him on Chevy Estate Ojomu in Lagos, a representation he knew to be false.
The court held that the convict assured the complainant that he was the owner of the land after the payment was made.
The court held that the complainant discovered that someone had built on the land when he wanted to take possession and all efforts to recover his money proved abortive.
Ijelu, thereafter, sentenced the convict to seven years without option of fine on court one and one year jail term on count two.
The court further ordered the convict to restitute the sum of N62 million to the complainant.
EFCC had arraigned the convict on Oct. 15, 2023 but he pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge when it was read to him.
He was charged alongside his company, SGB &A Property Lines.
Following his not guilty plea, the EFCC Counsel Mr Spiff Owede, commenced trial and called two witnesses while the defendant testified as a sole witness for defence.
The prosecution also tendered several documents including extra-judicial statement of the convict which the court admitted in evidence.
According to the prosecution, the offence violates Section 1(3) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences 2006 and Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Hisbah operatives in Kano have successfully rescued 16 trafficked girls at a motor park in the state.
The victims, all underage girls were rescued at the luxury bus station, Unguwa Uku.
Speaking after the operation, the Deputy Commandant, Hisbah, Mujahid Aminuddeen Abubakar said, “Our men at the motor park were able to confiscate some persons with underage female children about to be trafficked to Lagos, from there to Benin Republic and to Ghana.
“What they do, is from Ghana they will procure fake passports for them and disperse them into other Arab countries.
“All the children are underage and all females and they don’t even know what is happening. From here, some of them will die, some will be sold, some will be subjected to prostitution, some will be made slaves and it’s all against the law.
“Unfortunately, they are all Hausa, nine from Kano, four from Katsina, two from Jigawa, one from Borno; about 16 of them.”
He, therefore, called on parents to be more vigilant and shun the temptation of acquiring wealth by all means by allowing their children to risk their lives for trafficking.
“Parents must watch over them and be more vigilant; there is nothing good about it, it’s an act of slavery these girls are being subjected to when taken outside,” he said.

A 32-year-old man, Sunday Abilewa, has been remanded in custody for allegedly strangling his father to death in Isua-Akoko, Akoko South-East Local Government Area of Ondo State, following a dispute over a motorcycle.
The defendant was arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court on a one-count charge of murder after his arrest by officers of the Ondo State Police Command.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Abdulateef Suleiman, told the court that the incident occurred on December 31, 2024 at about 5:00 pm at Eberi Quarters, Isua-Akoko.

DHQ Reports Deaths of 22 Soldiers and Several Terrorist Commanders in Borno Clash
An intense clash between the Nigerian Military and terrorists in Borno State has led to the death of 22 soldiers and the neutralization of over 70 insurgents, including three high-ranking terrorist commanders.
This development was disclosed on Sunday by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, in an official statement. The encounter occurred in the notorious Timbuktu Triangle, a stronghold of terrorist activity in Borno State.
The operation, conducted under Operation Hadin Kai, commenced on January 16, 2025, with the objective of dismantling terrorist enclaves within the region. According to Maj. Gen. Buba, the clearance operation involved multiple engagements with insurgents, resulting in significant gains for the military.
He stated:
“Troops of Operation Hadin Kai in the Northeast conducted a clearance operation targeting a renowned terrorist stronghold known as the Timbuktu Triangle. The three-pronged offensive aimed to dismantle terrorist activities in the area began on January 16, 2025, and is ongoing.”
During the encounters, the military neutralized over 70 insurgents, including three key commanders:
Talha (Terrorist Special Forces Commander)
Mallam Umar (Operations Commander)
Abu Yazeed (Brigade Commander)
Maj. Gen. Buba detailed how the terrorists deployed various lethal tactics, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs), suicide bombers, and drones, to halt the military’s advance. However, the troops, well-versed in such methods, successfully repelled the attacks.
He explained:
“During the operations, the terrorists deployed improvised explosive devices, person-borne IEDs (suicide bombers), and vehicle-borne IEDs (explosive-laden vehicles) in an attempt to hinder the troops’ progress. Additionally, they employed amateur drones, which were shot down by the troops.”
Despite the military’s successes, the operation came at a cost. “Troops sadly recorded 22 killed-in-action casualties with several others wounded. The media is urged to refrain from publishing the names of the fallen soldiers until their families have been formally notified,” Buba said.
The killing of Talha, Mallam Umar, and Abu Yazeed marks a significant blow to the leadership structure of the terrorist group, potentially disrupting their operational strategies. Military analysts have hailed the operation as a critical step in weakening the insurgency in the region.
Operation Hadin Kai continues to target terrorist strongholds across the Northeast, aiming to restore stability to the region. Maj. Gen. Buba reiterated the military’s commitment to safeguarding the nation while urging the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies.
The loss of 22 soldiers serves as a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by the armed forces in their fight against terrorism. Citizens and community leaders have been encouraged to honor the memory of the fallen heroes by supporting the military’s efforts to secure the nation.
This operation underscores the complexities of combating insurgency in regions like the Timbuktu Triangle and highlights the Nigerian military’s determination to overcome these challenges in pursuit of lasting peace.
