Four South African Policemen Arrested for Stealing N1.9 Billion in Jewelry from Nigerians
Four police officers have been arrested in South Africa after they are accused of robbery.
They were accused of stealing Jewelry worth R20million (N1.9billion) in an aggravated robbery charge.
The officers were named as Jacobus Adriaan Groenewald, Bradley Dimitri Minnaar, Mthuthuzeli Mafanya, and Bathandwa Soldati.
They all appeared at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on October 3.
It was reported that the officers used their official uniforms and vehicles to stage the robbery, claiming they were searching for a wanted Nigerian national.
However, they left fingerprints and DNA evidence, which was used to trace them and orchestrate their arrest.
It was also stated that there were actually eight officers behind the incident.
“Those caught are four of eight officers behind this whole thing,” the source said.
“They went to the home of a rich Nigerian and told those in the house they were searching for a wanted Nigerian but instead they stole jewellery valued at R20 million.
“They are so stupid they left their fingerprints all over the house as they stole Rolex watches, gold bracelets, emeralds and ivory items. It was all brand names. But they definitely planned the robbery. They are based at different stations but basically they formed a syndicate,” a source was quoted.
“They actually placed false plates on the SAPS vehicles but were caught because the SAPS tracking system placed them on the scene.
“In the Police your DNA and fingerprints are recorded and that is how they were linked after the homeowner opened a case.”
The Provincial Community Police Board described their actions as a. betrayal of trust and erosion of public confidence.
Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, confirmed the arrests and said they were investigated by the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit.
“On September 14 at about 1.35am a house robbery occurred at the premises of a foreign national in Sunset Avenue, Llandudno, allegedly involving several Police officers. This case was reported at Hout Bay police and transferred to the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit for further investigation,” he stated.

Troost-Ekong dismisses retirement talks
By Kayode Sanni-Arewa
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has vehemently dismissed any talk of retirement amid rumours that the Al-Kholood defender may quit the national team after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Despite being just 31 years old, Troost-Ekong is the oldest player in the team, with Moses Simon (29) the second oldest, while Alex Iwobi, who is 28, is the third oldest player in the current squad.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday ahead of Monday’s (today) Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Troost-Ekong, who was named the Most Valuable Player at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, affirmed his commitment to the national team.
“It is a question I get asked a lot by Nigerians, but I think it is a bit too early,” he said.
He continued, “I am 31 now, and I think I am playing my best football in recent years. We are only talking about 12 months from now, so after that, we will see,” Troost-Ekong explained.
“It will not be my decision; it will be up to the coaches. Once I feel I am no longer an asset to the team, I will have that discussion.
“But I still have some targets in sight—that will be the AFCON in 2025 and the World Cup in 2026. We’ll see what happens afterwards.”
Troost-Ekong could add to his 75 international caps when the Eagles host the Amavubi today in their final game of the qualifiers.
