Protesters clash with LASTMA, Police over death of motorist
Hell was let loose yesterday in the Super area of Abule-Egba, Lagos, as angry protesters engaged officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the police who accompanied them in a confrontation.
The LASTMA officers and policemen were accused of causing the death of a man who was crushed by a vehicle whose driver was evading the law enforcement agents.
A witness, Babs Saliu, told our reporter that trouble started when a man driving a Toyota Corolla salon was arrested for driving on the BRT lane: “The driver was pleading that he didn’t know that he had veered into the BRT lane as there were no traffic signs or road markings to warn motorists of the BRR lane. The LATSMA men and police escorts rebuffed the driver’s plea.
“I overheard the driver telling them that he would be wedding next Saturday.
But the government agencies insisted that the offending driver must grease their palms with N100,000. He stared begging that he had only N40,000 to part with. The government agents threatened to tow the vehicle to their office and the government would confiscate the vehicle.
It was at that point that the driver and his younger brother said that they would pay N70,000 and the officials insisted that he must pay the N100,000 or he would regret it. One of the officials told the driver that he should go to a nearby POS to withdraw the money and give to them and he would be given back his vehicle.
“It was while the negotiation was going on that another vehicle whose the driver was escaping from LASTMA for also driving on the BRT lane hit the Corolla driver and his younger brother and drove away. The man died on the spot while his brother who was badly injured was rushed to the hospital.
“Passersby and traders who claimed the LASTMA officials and their police escorts always use the BRT lane at that particular bus stop to milk unsuspecting motorists who make the mistake of entering the BRT lane got angry and said that enough was enough and chased away the government officials, who escaped by the whisker.”
The angry protesters, numbering about 2,000, barricaded the BRT lane with the Corolla car and other items. When our reporter visited the scene, the protesters were chanting war songs, warning that the government should withdraw its agencies, LATSMA and the police, from the area.
A trader stationed along the road said, “Look at the the road, is there any sign to show that it is a BRT lane? If you are not conversant with the road, while descending from Abule Egba bridge en route Iyana-Ipaja there is no way that innocent drivers will not enter the BRT lane.
The police and LATSMA have been using this means to rob unsuspecting motorists of their hard-earned money. Today, they have finally killed an about-to-wed man. If the unscrupulous and greedy government agencies had collected the money the deceased offered, the reckless driver wouldn’t have rammed into him and his younger brother.
“We are calling on the state government to withdraw the police and LATSMA from the place, as they are not working for the government but for their pockets. They are making millions every day. They should also do road signs to warn motorists, especially those coming from Ogun State, about BRT lanes. The normal road and the BRT lanes are conjoined and it is difficult to differentiate them. Government agencies have cashed in on the ignorance of motorists to rob them of their money.
“Instead of staying on the entry point to control traffic or direct motorists not to pass there, they would hide somewhere, so when a motorist makes the mistake of entering the BRT road, the officials, with armed policemen, would use sharp objects to barricade the road and swoop on the offender. They would never take any offender who pays above N50,000 to the station, but would end up collecting money from them.”
As at press time, the protesters were still at the scene guarding the Corolla car and chanting war songs. One of them said, “We don’t need BRT, it will never operate on this route again. We don’t need LASTMA and police here. We are tired of arrests and stealing of our hard-earned money. Police and LATSMA are working for their tummy.”
Five police patrol vans were on ground trying to recover the vehicle used in blocking the BRT lane, but the protesters were not ready to give way as they resisted the armed policemen.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said, “I am aware that a driver who broke the law by passing through the BRT lane hit a man and the man died. I have not been properly briefed.”

Police Arrest Killers Of Former Gombe Permanent Secretary
The Kano Police have arrested three people responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Atiku Mu’azu, a former Gombe State Permanent Secretary.

While addressing journalists, the State Police Commissioner, Salman Dogo Garba, stated, “The suspects involved in the kidnapping and the tragic killing of one Alhaji Atiku Mu’azu, a crime that has left a mark of grief within our community, were arrested on credible intelligent networking.”
The Commissioner explained that on January 10, 2025, a report was received from a resident of Janbulo Quarters, Kano. The report indicated that on January 8, 2025, 64-year-old Atiku Mu’azu was kidnapped, and the perpetrators demanded a ransom of 20 million naira. “On receiving the report, we raised a team from the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit and directed the rescue of the victim and arrest of the culprit(s). A sustained follow-up coupled with an intelligence-led operation resulted in the arrest of the suspects in connection with the case,” the Commissioner added.
The suspects include Abubakar Hassan, also known as Captain, a 33-year-old from Ringim Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa State, who was identified as the mastermind behind the crime. The suspects are currently under investigation by the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and they will be charged to court after the investigation is complete.

EFCC to invite Ondo Speaker over N200m for phone calls, investigates N11.5b allocation to finance ministry
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has started investigating the allocation of N11.5 billion as a security vote for the Ondo State Ministry of Finance in this year’s budget.
Vanguard gathered that personnel of the EFCC have arrived in the state to verify the budget details.
The leadership of the State Assembly would soon be summoned to provide further insights into the budget’s passage, particularly the N11.5 billion allocation for the Finance Ministry as a security vote.
The allocation of N11.5b and others for the finance ministry has raised concerns about transparency and accountability in the state’s financial management regime.
Also, in the Ministry of Finance 2025 budget, an additional allocation of N250 million was budgeted for honorarium and sitting allowances and N1.5 billion for contingencies.
Recall that the state governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on December 10, 2024, presented a N655 billion budget to the Ondo State House of Assembly.
Aiyedatiwa on December 30, 2024, signed into law the budget passed by the Assembly after it had been increased by N43.4 billion, bringing the total budget to N698 billion.
Meanwhile, The Nigerian Anti-Corruption Network (NACN) has condemned the inclusion of the N11.5 billion security vote.
In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Mike Aderosoye, the group expressed outrage over what it described as an “affront to the sensibilities of Ondo State citizens.”
Aderosoye said that “It is unacceptable for a commissioner, who reports to the governor, to appropriate a security vote budget head when the governor is already receiving one.
This raises suspicions of gross mismanagement and deliberate looting of public resources.
It also criticized Governor Aiyedatiwa for failing to prioritize meaningful governance.
“It is shameful that a governor who has not commissioned a kilometre of road in the past year and has abandoned countless projects would allow his commissioner to insert such an outrageous sum into the budget for personal gain,” the group stated.
The NACN urged the EFCC to thoroughly investigate the matter, warning against any attempt to sweep it under the carpet.
“The EFCC must prove its commitment to fighting corruption. We will not hesitate to seek legal redress if this case is abandoned,” it said.
The group called on the state government to redirect the N11.5 billion to developmental projects, including roads, healthcare, and education.
“This money belongs to the people of Ondo State and should be used to alleviate their suffering, not to fund dubious security votes.
A top civil servant staff who spoke on condition of anonymity described the allocation as “strange.”
A source in the EFCC said that “We are investigating whether such an amount has ever been allocated to the ministry in previous budgets.
We are also interested in understanding the purpose of this allocation and how it will be spent, especially since the governor already receives a security vote package which is not disclosed.
“This is not a witch hunt but a clear way of trying to find out the truth of the matter on the case at hand.
Several anti-corruption bodies have called and made inquiries on the matter like you are also doing right now”
Meanwhile, members of the public have expressed concern over the allocation of N200m to all members of the Assembly on phone calls and also that of the speaker which is to gulp N280,000,00 in the fiscal year among other expenses accrued to the Assembly including travelling and Security.
In an interview, civil servants said that “the allocation is nothing but misplacement of priorities on the part of the Assembly members and that of the government.
They said further that, the constituencies of the members are nothing to write home about in terms of infrastructure and Education
“it’s a pity that we are where we are today in the state. According to her ” She said the state is the least developing state in terms of infrastructure in the southwest, that the assembly members can not fight for this but rather to be sharing the commonwealth of the people.
The Finance commissioner, R S Omowunmi Isaac, could not be reached for comment.
But a top officer in the ministry said that the allocation to the finance ministry has been thoroughly scrutinized by the assembly and passed.
He said that there is no reason to raise unnecessary alarm.
Also, efforts to speak with the Speaker, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji proved abortive.
A lawmaker who spoke in confidence said that the members are not afraid of the EFCC officials since they don’t have skeletons in their cupboards.
The anti-graft agency officials are not lions. We’ll open our books for them to scrutinise. The budget is now a public document. There’s nothing to fear.

Bandits attack Abuja community, abduct five
By Francesca Hangeior
A group of at least 20 armed bandits attacked the Chikakore community in Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday night, abducting five residents, including a family of three and their visitor.
According to police sources, the assailants stormed the Health Centre extension area of Chikakore around 11 pm. The victims included Adesiyan Akinropo, his wife, their son and a visiting guest. Another neighbour was also taken, bringing the total number of abductees to five.
During the attack, a woman sustained a head injury after being struck with a gun butt. She was rushed to the hospital as she bled profusely. Police operatives from the Byzahin division reportedly arrived at the scene but the bandits had already fled with their captives.
Residents expressed frustration over the delayed police response, noting that officers arrived approximately 90 minutes after the incident.
“The bandits have resumed attacks in Chikakore. We need a police division here in this community. We have land and a five-bedroom apartment already built to accommodate the police but there is no deployment yet,” a community member lamented to Sahara Reporters.
The attack adds to growing concerns about security in the Chikakore community which previously faced violence in January when fleeing bandits from Katsina State detonated explosives near an Islamic school in Kuchibuyi, Bwari Area Council. That explosion claimed two lives.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, for comments were unsuccessful as calls went unanswered.
