Customs intercept smugglers with 10,970 litres of petrol concealed in sacks
The Zone A Operation Whirlwind Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos recently intercepted smugglers attempting to transport over 10,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) concealed in sacks.
In a statement, the Commander of Operation Whirlwind, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Mahmood Bello, disclosed that the operation took place on New Year’s Eve. Customs operatives conducted surveillance along the waterside in Badagry, where they intercepted 61 sacks and seven jerry cans of PMS loaded in a large canoe headed for the Benin Republic.
Bello noted that smugglers had revived an old smuggling technique of concealing PMS in sacks. This marked the first time this method was encountered during Operation Whirlwind, as previous seizures had involved PMS transported in jerry- cans.
He said: “Recall that the National Coordinator instructed our operatives to intensify efforts during the festive period to prevent smugglers from exploiting the season. On December 31, 2024, our team conducted surveillance along the Badagry waterside and intercepted 61 sacks and seven jerry cans of PMS, all loaded in a large canoe bound for the Benin Republic.
“Each sack contained 150 litres, translating to a total of 10,970 litres of PMS. The products were evacuated with reinforcement from the Nigerian military stationed at the Badagry Barracks. The operation was highly successful, with no casualties despite resistance from the smugglers.”
Bello added that due to the volatile nature of the seized product, the National Coordinator had ordered its auctioning. The interception highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Customs in curbing smuggling activities along Nigeria’s borders.

Police arrest couple for ‘sexually assaulting’ 13-year-old girl in Rivers
The police command in Rivers says its operatives have arrested a couple for allegedly raping and beating a 13-year-old girl in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
NAN reports that Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, said the incident happened in Rupokwu town in Obio/Akpor LGA.
According to the police spokesperson, Goodness, the mother of the assaulted teenager, said the wife accused her daughter of having sexual intercourse with her husband on December 25.
She alleged that the husband had sent his wife and her friend on an errand, leaving the teenager alone with him in the house on the day the incident happened.
“After he raped her, he told my daughter to leave his house. My daughter returned home afterwards but did not report what had transpired, probably due to the threat from the man,” the police spokesperson quoted the mother of the teenager to have said.
“On December 29, 2024, the wife visited my shop and asked the teenager to follow her to her apartment and assist her with house chores.
“It was on getting there that she accused my daughter of sleeping with her husband, stripped her naked, poured pepper on her, and inserted the same in her vagina.
“She then dragged my daughter outside and flogged her mercilessly with a machete while neighbours recorded the attack.
“Before I got home, neighbours had already rescued my daughter from the wife’s assault. My daughter was still writhing in pain from the beating and the pepper applied to her body and private area.”
The police spokesperson said the suspects have been transferred to the state criminal investigation and intelligence department (SCIID) for investigation and possible prosecution.
