2026 WCQ: Super Eagles set to get qualification lifeline as South Africa risk 3 points deduction

Nigeria’s hopes of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup might have just gotten an unexpected boost following controversy around South Africa midfielder, Teboho Mokoena.
Mokoena should have been suspended for Bafana Bafana’s Matchday 5 clash against Lesotho due to accumulated yellow cards.
He was booked in their Matchday 1 fixture against Benin Republic and picked up another on Matchday 4 against Zimbabwe.
The two bookings rendered Mokoena ineligible to feature in the subsequent fixture against Lesotho.
These revelations have sparked speculation that South Africa could face a points deduction if confirmed by the relevant authorities.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers rulebook subsection 9 states that a player who receives two yellow cards in separate matches must serve a one-match suspension.
Mokoena playing for 81 minutes against Lesotho is therefore a potential breach of FIFA regulations.
If the standard six-game suspension rule applies to the 10-game qualification format, South Africa could face a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player.
This development could dramatically shift the dynamics of Group C, where Nigeria is battling to secure a World Cup ticket.
South Africa currently tops Group C with 10 points, followed by Benin with eight, Rwanda with seven, and Nigeria in fourth place with six points.

A Look At How Much Premier League Referees Earn

Being a referee in the Premier League is a tough job. They have to make quick decisions in fast-paced games, and when they make mistakes, they can get a lot of criticism from fans, players, and the media. Despite this pressure, referees are well-paid.
Premier League referees have a challenging job, but they are compensated well for their expertise and the important role they play in football. This professional approach helps maintain high standards in one of the world’s most popular sports leagues.
How Referees Got Professional
Back in 2001, an organization called the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) was set up to help referees get better at their jobs and make sure they were paid fairly. Before this, referees were part-time and didn’t earn as much.
Why Referees Are Important
Referees play a crucial role in soccer matches, ensuring the game is fair and the rules are followed. Their job is hard because they have to be very accurate with their decisions during the game.
How Much Referees Earn
Today, referees in the Premier League are well-paid, reflecting the high stakes and professional nature of the league. According to reports, the average salary for Premier League referees, including bonuses and match fees, ranges from £170,000 to £180,000 annually. This compensation structure is designed to reflect their expertise and the high-pressure environment in which they operate.
What PGMOL Does
PGMOL doesn’t just handle referee salaries. They also train referees and help them improve. They make sure that referees do a good job in matches and use technology like VAR (Video Assistant Referee) properly to make fair decisions.
Earnings Per Match
On top of their salaries, referees earn per-match fees. Reports suggest that referees get about £1,116 for each match they officiate. This fee contributes to their overall earnings and rewards them for their performance in individual games.
Salaries for Top Referees
The most experienced referees, who handle high-stakes matches and have more responsibilities, can earn significantly more. For example, top referees might make around £250,000 per year, recognizing their expertise and the critical role they play in the league.

Ancelotti faces trial for alleged tax fraud

Prosecutors are seeking a jail term of four years and nine months for the 65-year-old Italian, accusing him of having cost Spain’s treasury more than one million euros ($1.1 million) in undeclared earnings from image rights in 2014 and 2015.
Carlo Ancelotti will go on trial next week for allegedly failing to declare income to Spain’s tax office, the Madrid court which will hear the case said Friday.
The trial will begin on Wednesday and it is expected to last two days, a spokesman for the court said.
Ancelotti, who as a coach has won a record five Champions League trophies including three with Real, must be present for the hearings, he added.
Prosecutors accuse him of only declaring in his tax returns the personal remuneration received from Real Madrid during those two years even though he himself declared himself to be a tax resident in Spain and indicated his home was in Madrid.
They accuse Ancelotti of allegedly setting up a “confusing” and “complex” system of shell companies to hide his extra earnings from his image rights as well as from other sources such as real estate.
A Spanish court in 2023 ordered Ancelotti to stand trial over the affair, but did not set a date.
Ancelotti dismissed the affair last year as “an old story that I hope will be resolved soon” when he was asked about the case.
He took over at Real Madrid in 2013, leaving in May 2015, before being appointed at Bayern Munich the following year.
The former Italy international midfielder, who as a player won the European Cup twice with AC Milan, later managed Napoli and Everton before returning to Real Madrid in 2021.
Aside from his success in the Champions League he has won domestic league titles with Madrid and Milan, in England with Chelsea, in Germany with Bayern Munich and in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

Juventus sack Motta, appoint Tudor as new head coach

Thiago Motta was sacked as Juventus coach on Sunday after less than one season in charge with former player Igor Tudor replacing him, the Italian giants announced.
“Juventus FC announce that Thiago Motta has been relieved of his duties as men’s first team coach,” said a statement by Juventus.
“Juventus also announce that the team will now be led by Igor Tudor, who will take charge of his first training session tomorrow, Monday, 24 March.”
The decision to dump Motta followed a 4-0 defeat by Atalanta — their heaviest home defeat since 1967 — and a 3-0 loss at Fiorentina in the team’s last two games, leaving Juve a disappointing fifth in the Italian top flight.
Tudor will be tasked with securing fourth place, the last qualifying spot for the Champions League, which is crucial for Juventus’ fragile finances.
Croatian Tudor made 174 appearances for Juve as a player, before going into coaching. His past managerial experiences include Verona, Marseille and Lazio.
Although his arrival in Piedmont had raised high hopes after leading Bologna to the Champions League last season, Motta, 42, quickly disappointed the supporters.
His team rarely thrilled and collected 13 draws in the league, while summer recruits failed to live up to expectations.
Last month, they were knocked out of the Champions League by PSV Eindhoven in the play-off for a place in the last 16 and the Italian Cup, of which they were the defending champions, when they lost to Empoli in the quarter-finals.
The Italian-Brazilian coach made some odd choices, notably by relegating Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic and Turkish phenomenon Kenan Yildiz to the bench.
Juve are in a fight for a place in Europe’s top club competition with six points separating Bologna in fourth and ninth-placed AC Milan.
“The club would like to thank Thiago Motta and all of his staff for their professionalism and for the work they have carried out in recent months with passion and dedication,” added Juventus.
