Donald Trump will make a triumphant return to the White House to meet President Joe Biden Wednesday, in the Republican’s first visit since departing under a torrent of scandal nearly four years ago.
Trump’s meeting with Biden comes as he moves swiftly to name his administration, including the world’s richest man Elon Musk as head of a new group aimed at slashing government spending.
Biden invited his sworn rival to meet in the Oval Office — despite the fact that 78-year-old Trump, who has consistently refused to admit his 2020 election loss, never afforded Biden the same courtesy.
Biden, 81, is expected to urge a smooth transition of power in the encounter at 11:00 am (1600 GMT) — and push for continued support for Ukraine.
“He believes in the norms. He believes in our institutions,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday when asked why Biden was inviting Trump.
“The American people deserve this. They deserve a peaceful transfer of power.”
However, in a break with protocol, Trump’s wife Melania “will not be attending today’s meeting at the White House,” her office said on X.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Biden would go over top foreign policy issues when he meets Trump — including US support for Ukraine against Russia, which Trump has indicated he will end.
The meeting may be a bitter pill to swallow for Biden, who branded Trump a threat to democracy.
The Republican leader of the House, Speaker Mike Johnson, said Trump may also visit the US Capitol, which a mob of his supporters stormed in 2021 to try to reverse his election loss.
Trump’s party looks set to take both chambers of Congress and consolidate his extraordinary comeback.
Tradition restored
Biden’s Oval Office invitation restores a presidential transition tradition that Trump tore up when he lost the 2020 election, refusing to sit down with Biden or even attend the inauguration.
Then-president Barack Obama had welcomed Trump to the White House when the tycoon won the 2016 election.
But by the time Trump took his last Marine One flight from the White House lawn on January 20, 2021, he had also been repudiated by many in his own party for having stoked the assault on the Capitol.
That period of disgrace soon evaporated, however, as Republicans returned to Trump’s side, recognizing his unique electoral power at the head of his right-wing movement.
Trump enters his second term with a near total grip on his party and the Democrats in disarray.
He has spent the week since the election at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida assembling his top team, as the world watches to see how closely he sticks to his pledges of isolationism, mass deportations and sweeping tariffs.
Trump named Space X, Tesla and X boss Musk, and another ally, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, to lead a “Department of Government Efficiency (‘DOGE’)” — a tongue-in-cheek reference to an internet meme and cryptocurrency.
Musk’s out-sized influence within the Trump camp was underlined by multiple US media reports that the entrepreneur was accompanying the incoming president to his meetings with the Republican Party on Wednesday.
Trump is moving quickly to fill out his administration, picking a host of ultra-loyalists.
Trump nominated Fox News host and army veteran Pete Hegseth as his incoming defense secretary. An outspoken opponent of so-called “woke” ideology in the armed forces, Hegseth has little experience similar to managing the mammoth US military budget and bureaucracy.
Trump named South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem — an ally who famously wrote about shooting her dog because it did not respond to training — as head of the Department of Homeland Security.
Florida Senator Marco Rubio is tipped for secretary of state, US media reported, while Trump has also confirmed Congressman Mike Waltz, a former special forces officer, as his national security advisor.
John Ratcliffe, another figure who became prominent for defending Trump during his scandal-plagued first term, was named to head the CIA.

2027: Akwa Ibom ‘ll Deliver Highest Votes For Tinubu – Akpabio(Photos)
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, disclosed that Akwa Ibom State will deliver the highest number of votes for the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the South South geo-political zone.

Akpabio stated this during the consultation of critical stakeholders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), at the Government House, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State where Governor Umo Eno, formally consulted party members on his return bid to the Government House in 2027

A statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, quoted Akpabio as saying,” the event of today shows that Governor Eno is a peaceful Governor, a man of God in words and in deeds. His peaceful disposition and ability to carry everybody along has given us the assurance that in the South South geo-political zone, Akwa Ibom will deliver the highest number of votes.

“Despite the fact that he has no one challenging him for the sole ticket of the party, he is humble enough to still consult party members and critical stakeholders in the state. That is very instructive of the kind of person he is.

“If you also go around the state, you will know that there is a Government in place. Projects are being initiated, completed and commissioned for the use of the people. Even abandoned projects are being completed and commissioned. That is a Governor that has the progress of his people at heart. I congratulate him on the recent commencement of International flights to and from the Victor Attah International Airport.”

Speaking further, Akpabio stated that the people and Government of Akwa Ibom State were very grateful to President Bola Tinubu for supporting one of their sons to the exalted position of the President of the Senate and would show their gratitude at the polls next year.

Trump to undergo dental, medical exams on May 26
US President Donald Trump is slated to have his annual dental and medical evaluations on May 26 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the White House said Monday.
“This will include the President’s routine annual dental and medical assessments as part of his regular preventive health care,” the White House statement said.
The Republican billionaire, who turns 80 next month, has consistently told the press he is mentally and physically well — often unprompted.
In October, Trump underwent his second major medical checkup of 2025, and later said an MRI taken that hospital visit showed his cardiovascular health was “excellent.”
“His cardiac age — a validated measure of cardiovascular vitality via ECG — was found to be approximately 14 years younger than his chronological age. He continues to maintain a demanding daily schedule without restriction,” his doctor, Navy Captain Sean Barbabella, wrote in a letter released by the White House at the time.
Trump also had a semi-annual checkup last April.
Since returning to office Trump — the oldest person ever sworn in as US president — has often appeared with bruising on his right hand, occasionally covered with makeup.
The White House has attributed the marks to the aspirin he takes as part of a “standard” cardiovascular health regimen.
Last summer, the administration disclosed that Trump had been evaluated for swelling in his legs and diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency — a common condition in which faulty vein valves allow blood to pool, causing swelling, cramping and skin changes.
It can be managed with medication or targeted procedures.

Electricity Costs May go up Again as NERC Defends Tariff Review Plan
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has signalled a possible upward review of electricity tariffs as part of efforts aimed at improving power supply and service delivery across the country.
The commission disclosed this in a statement shared via its official X account on Monday, assuring consumers that any planned tariff adjustment would be designed to improve service quality while protecting customer rights.
Although no new tariff rates were announced, NERC said electricity consumers deserved “satisfaction and accurate information” regarding any increase, stressing that there would be no hidden charges or arbitrary disconnection of power supply.
“We are bringing the electricity tariff closer to you to improve your quality of life, and we assure you of continued protection of your rights every day,” the commission stated.
NERC further explained that it was working towards ensuring access to “quality and affordable electricity” while addressing challenges linked to the current billing structure and inconsistent electricity supply across the country.
According to the regulator, the existing “one-size-fits-all” billing system has significant limitations, especially in situations where consumers receive irregular or inadequate electricity supply.
The development comes amid mounting public concern over the rising cost of electricity and persistent complaints about poor power supply despite previous tariff increases.
Recall that in April 2024, NERC approved a major tariff hike for Band A customers, increasing electricity rates from about ₦68 per kilowatt-hour to ₦225 per kilowatt-hour for consumers expected to receive at least 20 hours of electricity daily.
The increase affected about 15 per cent of electricity consumers nationwide and was later adjusted downward to approximately ₦206.80/kWh in May 2024 before some electricity distribution companies implemented slight increases to around ₦209.50/kWh in July 2024.
Despite the tariff adjustments, many Nigerians have continued to express frustration over what they describe as poor service delivery, erratic electricity supply, and estimated billing practices that do not reflect actual consumption.
