Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has advocated a multi-faceted approach with intelligence-driven strategies in combating drug abuse.

Otti spoke on Thursday when he received a delegation of the new State Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nnadi Wilfred, in Nvosi in the Isialangwa South Local Government Area of the state.

He frowned at the evolving nature of the drug menace and its impacts on criminal activities in the country.

The governor also underscored the need for collaborative efforts between government and security agencies in combating all forms of crime and drug-related offences, assuring that the state government would give the needed support to fight all forms of criminality in the state.

According to him, the fight against drugs has metamorphosed into something a bit more difficult because society is now dealing with a wide range of issues.

“When you look at crime and drug, you’ll see that they are closely related. You will find out that in a lot of cases, people who get involved in crime and criminality start with drugs.

Your sacrifices won’t be taken for granted, Otti assures veterans, serving officers
“So, whether you are Army, Navy, DSS, we are all one. Anywhere we need to give support, you don’t even need to ask. You can count on the government to give you support so that we can rid this place of criminals” Otti stated.

The governor, who renewed his administration’s commitment and support to security agencies in their efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment, recommended that the team meet with his Senior Special Assistant on Homeland Security to collaborate, identify, and eliminate possible hotspots in the state.

The governor also emphasized the role of education in crime prevention and expressed optimism that with the free and compulsory education for school-aged children in primary and secondary school, children vulnerable to drug abuse and criminality will reduce significantly.

Earlier, the State Commander, NDLEA, said that he came on a familiarisation visit, having resumed as the NDLEA Commander last December.

He expressed his gratitude to Otti and his wife, Priscilla, for their involvement in carrying out awareness campaigns against drug abuse as well as the rehabilitation of illicit drug users.

There was No Election in Idemili North/South Federal Constituency, Says Ikokwu – Petitions NDC Election Appeal Panel

Aspirant for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency Dr. Chiogo Constance Ikokwu (Ugonecheora) says no real primary election took place in the constituency on the 29th of May, and has asked the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Election Appeal Panel not to declare a winner, and to immediately investigate the roles played by opposing candidates and their supporters in disrupting the process.

“I respectfully call on the Election Panel to immediately investigate the roles played by unruly candidates, their agents, and supporters in the disruption of the process. I further urge the panel to take disciplinary action against any individual found culpable in sponsoring violence, intimidation, or acts capable of undermining the party’s democratic process.

“I also call for a thorough investigation into the role played by individuals and officials saddled with the responsibility of organizing and coordinating the election, whose apparent failure, negligence, or inability to properly manage the process significantly contributed to the confusion, disorder, and eventual collapse of the exercise.

“I demand that the failed exercise be declared inconclusive. Mr. Eric Anyamene should not be declared winner. Hon. Uche Okonkwo should also not be declared winner.

“It will be a fraudulent choice if the NDC names either Mr. Anyamene or Hon. Okonkwo as winner for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency because the party would have chosen them through brazen criminal acts contrary to natural justice, equity and good conscience. No direct primary election took place in Idemili North and South Federal Constituency to enable members to choose their representative by popular votes.”

Background
From the onset, there was widespread confusion over the designated venue for Idemili South, which was a deliberate act of sabotage. Party members, delegates, and supporters were subjected to conflicting information, leaving many uncertain about where the election was to take place. When the designated venue was located, the absence of proper coordination, accreditation, and supervision compounded the disorder, preventing the exercise from taking place.

The situation deteriorated when rival supporters and suspected thugs loyal to both Hon. Okonkwo and Mr. Anyamene engaged in violent activities, creating panic, and forcing many party members to flee for their safety. Specifically, Mr. Anyamene’s unruly supporters recorded a video of random voters in the South while chanting “Eric is winning, Eric is winning,” and there was no election going on. His thugs clashed with other thugs, resulting in an atmosphere of intimidation and insecurity, which rendered the environment in Idemili South unsuitable for the conduct of a free, fair, and credible election.

Dr. Ikokwu’s supporters who had waited from as early as 10:00 a.m., were unable to cast their votes before the exercise collapsed around 1.30pm. In the North, the story was the same. Mr. Anyamene dominated with hired goons that caused mayhem at the election ground. Dr. Ikokwu’s poster was torn to pieces by Anyamene’s thugs over there.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have uncovered consignments of high potency illicit drugs concealed in water purifier machines shipped to Lagos from Netherlands.
The illicit drug consignments, mainly: ketamine weighing 3kilograms and 199 grams of MDMA (Ecstasy) pills which were carefully hidden in the water purifier machines, were discovered and seized at a courier company in Lagos on Tuesday 26th May 2026.

In Kaduna, NDLEA operatives arrested a couple: Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, along with another suspect, Salomi Ezekiel, 38, following the seizure of 100 jumbo bags of skunk with a gross weight of 1,246 kilograms from their home at Gonin Gora area of Kaduna on Sunday 24th May. In another interdiction operation in the state, NDLEA officers on patrol along Abuja-Kaduna highway by Jere, same day, intercepted a 30-year-old suspect, Sunusi Musa, with 380 military-grade ammunition, RLA 7.62mm, going to Katsina state. The suspect and the exhibit have since been handed over to the appropriate security agency for further action.
Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives in Niger State acting on credible intelligence raided a warehouse at Gidan Kukah, Bosso LGA where 457 kilograms of skunk were recovered on Wednesday 27th May and a suspect, Godwin Zakka, 46, arrested at his Gbeganu, Minna residence in connection with the seizure.

In Enugu, operatives on patrol along Onitsha/Enugu expressway on Thursday 28th May intercepted a Taraba state-bound commercial vehicle marked JAY-158-YF. A search of the bus led to the recovery of 22,000 pills of tramadol, 100 ampoules of pentazocine and 200 grams of bromazepam while a suspect James Maigari Wisdom was arrested.

With the same zeal, Commands and formations of the Agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities in schools, worship centres, work places and communities among others in the past week. These include: WADA enlightenment lecture for students and staff of Government Secondary School, Adiabo, Cross River; St Patrick’s Memorial College, Wukari, Taraba; Roman Catholic Mission Nursery and Primary School, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos; and Kings Secondary School, Amawbia, Anambra state, among others.
While commending the officers, men and women of Kaduna, Niger, and Enugu Commands as well as those of DOGI for the arrests and seizures, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) appreciated their drug supply reduction efforts balanced with WADA sensitization activities while he charged them and their compatriots across the country not to rest on their laurels.
