The Nigerian Army has called for urgent adoption of ranching as a national policy to address Nigeria’s growing food insecurity, as he said open grazing was no longer sustainable.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede stated this at the recent National Summit on Food, Nutrition, and Food Security, organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Nutrition and Food Security in Abuja.
Represented by Major General Olufemi Dare, Executive Director of Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited, Chief of Army Staff called on the National Assembly to enact legislation banning open grazing and provide ranching alternatives for herders.
He said, “The issue of food insecurity is give and take. Even if all security agencies are deployed to the farms, they cannot cover every farmland.
“There’s a need to embrace ranching, leverage technology, and ensure every state and local government gets involved. Security agencies should be empowered to focus on their constitutional duties.”
He stated that the Nigerian Army has established various formations aimed at preventing farmer-herder clashes.
Representative of the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Yusuf Sani Idris, drew attention to the contributions of the Nigerian Navy through the establishment of Admiralty Farms Limited, with operational farms across nearly all six geopolitical zones.
He explained that the farms provide both food security and physical security for farmers, while plans are underway to expand to other zones.
Representing the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Assistant Commandant General, Besong Michaels Ogar stressed the need for timely information sharing to address security breaches affecting farms.
He therefore urged the National Assembly to help streamline herder and farmer activities, citing the tension over encroached cattle routes in the Middle Belt, Northeast, and Northwest.
In his remarks, His Royal Highness, Dr. Emeka Ilouno, Eze Dunu of Ifitedunu, Anambra State, called on government to educate grassroots farmers and support cooperatives, as he said food security efforts must start from the local level.
Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Rep. Chike Okafor, reiterated the commitment of the committee to ensure a safer and food-secure Nigeria. According to him, “peace and security are vital for both farmers and security agencies alike”.
Suspected bandits have attacked Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing at least five residents, injuring others and abducting several people.
The attack reportedly occurred despite a security alert issued by the Sokoto State Police Command following intelligence indicating that suspected bandits were planning an attack in Kebbe LGA.
According to Crisis Reporter in the North-West, Bakastine, who disclosed the incident in a Friday post on X, the attackers reportedly spent several hours in Girkau during the invasion, leaving residents with limited options for escape or shelter.
He said five people were killed and several others injured, while the attackers also rustled a large number of cattle.
The victims reportedly included one person killed in Dukura and another in Jabga, both communities within Girkau Ward. Two other residents were injured during the attack.
A local vigilante was also reportedly abducted, while his locally made firearm was seized by the attackers.
The latest incident comes amid growing concerns over renewed bandit activities in Kebbe LGA. It also follows reports that suspected bandits had demanded a N40 million levy from residents of Kebbe town and threatened to attack the community if the money was not paid.
The fresh attack has heightened fears among residents and raised further concerns about the ability of security agencies to prevent attacks despite advance intelligence warnings.
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has vowed to give his life to protect his vote in the 2027 elections.
He charged Nigerians not to allow anyone to scare or intimidate them at polling booths during the 2027 election.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, Obi cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, against altering election results.
He said Nigerians would no longer allow themselves to be intimidated at polling stations, noting that the number of voters at a polling unit was usually higher than the number of officials.
According to Obi, an average polling unit could have between 40 and 50 voters and about five officials, making it difficult for the officials to intimidate or control the voters if they stand together.
He said Nigerians must work together to protect the country, adding that he was prepared to risk his life for the process.
Obi also said there would be improved communication to prevent intimidation during the election.
He warned that attempts could be made to influence the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal, IReV, but expressed confidence that such interference would be more difficult in 2027.
The former Anambra State governor said there would be more IReV systems available during the election and that alternative network arrangements would be provided where technical problems occurred.
He said allowing network glitches to persist could negatively affect the electoral process and contribute to the problems Nigerians were currently experiencing.
The Naira yesterday appreciated to N1,405 per dollar from N1,410 in the parallel market on Wednesday. Likewise, the naira appreciated to N1,322.5 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, NFEM.
Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, showed that the indicative exchange rate for the naira fell to N1,322.5 per dollar from N1,324.5 per dollar on Wednesday, indicating N2 appreciation for the naira.
Consequently, the margin between the parallel and official markets narrowed to N82.5 per dollar from N85.5 per dollar on Wednesday.
The interbank turnover at NFEM rose by 62.2 percent to N152.04 million yesterday from N93.7 million on Wednesday.
