Lagos Rain Grounds Flights As Airline Warns Of Widespread Delays

Passengers stranded at Manchester airport, flights cancelled due to power outage

Nigeria’s indigenous airline, Air Peace, has alerted passengers to expect delays across its flight network following a heavy downpour that disrupted operations at the Lagos airport on Sunday and Monday mornings.

The airline in a statement signed by Osifo-Whiskey Efe, spokesperson for Air Peace Limited on Monday said the adverse weather had affected several scheduled flights, resulting in delays across its operating routes.

The statement added: “Due to the heavy downpour of rain in Lagos this morning, some flights across our operating networks will be delayed.”

It urged travellers to remain patient, noting: “While weather is beyond our control and safety remains our utmost priority, we appeal for your understanding as we manage the disruptions as best as we can and get you to your destinations safely.”

Reaffirming its commitment to safety, the airline added: “At Air Peace, safety is not just a priority but a core commitment. We remain dedicated to upholding the highest safety standards for our passengers and crew.”

The rainfall on Sunday unleashed widespread devastation across parts of Plateau and Bauchi states, as flood destroyed at least 90 houses including schools, worship places, and submerged farmlands, displaced hundreds of residents.

In Plateau State, the Menkaat community in Shimankar District, Shendam Local Government Area, was among the worst hit.

Over 50 houses, including two primary schools and a place of worship, were reduced to rubble by the early morning downpour, which was accompanied by violent windstorms.

Residents reported that the winds uprooted trees, knocked down electric poles, and ripped off rooftops, leaving many homes uninhabitable.

“Many residential buildings have collapsed. The intensity of the rainfall also destroyed farms. People have lost a lot,” Mazawaje Daniel Danjuma, the councillor representing Shimankar, said.
