Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, the Bureau’s Director General, Captain Alex Badeh, revealed that the train had 583 passengers onboard when the accident occurred along the Kaduna corridor shortly after leaving Abuja around 11 a.m.

Badeh announced that an Investigator-in-Charge (IIC) has been appointed to lead the probe in collaboration with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and other stakeholders. He noted that investigators have already secured the site and preserved key evidence, including CCTV footage and other materials crucial to uncovering the cause of the derailment.

He assured the public that a comprehensive report will be released within 30 days of the incident—now 23 days away—and shared with the NRC, regulators, and Nigerians at large. Badeh, however, appealed for greater government support, citing funding shortfalls that limit the Bureau’s ability to carry out thorough investigations.

Eyewitnesses described the derailment scene as chaotic, with passengers scrambling for safety.

In response, the Nigerian Railway Corporation suspended services on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor pending further notice. NRC’s Managing Director, Fidet Opeifa, said engineers and investigators from the corporation, NSIB, and other agencies had been deployed to the site.

Opeifa dismissed claims that the trains were unsafe, insisting they were in good working condition, and confirmed that refunds had already been initiated for affected passengers.
