The sudden death of Bamidele Akingboye, former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the November 2024 Ondo State election, has stirred controversy as disturbing allegations suggest that one of his wives may have been involved.
Akingboye, aged 60, reportedly passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos. His death was initially announced by his Personal Assistant and Media Adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun, who described him as “a man of integrity, a philanthropist, and a visionary leader.” He assured that burial arrangements would be communicated soon.
However, the circumstances surrounding Akingboye’s demise have raised suspicions. SaharaReporters quoted sources claiming that his death was not natural but the result of domestic violence. The report alleged that the politician was pushed from a balcony by his wife, an act that allegedly caused severe injuries leading to his death. 
Graphic images circulating on social media appear to show deep cuts and bruises on his head and neck, intensifying speculation that foul play was involved.
A Prominent Politician and Businessman
Beyond politics, Akingboye was a well-known businessman. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Benshore Maritime, Clog Oil Systems, and also served as President of WeAfrica Group. His influence extended beyond Ondo politics into business circles, where he was regarded as a strategic thinker and philanthropist.
In the 2024 Ondo governorship race, Akingboye emerged as one of the prominent challengers before the election was won by APC candidate, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Calls for Transparency in Investigation
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to determine the true cause of death. Officers familiar with the matter said the probe would involve autopsy results, witness statements, and forensic analysis to establish whether Akingboye’s death was accidental, self-inflicted, or criminal.
Meanwhile, civil society organisations and rights groups have demanded a transparent inquiry, warning against a possible cover-up due to the political and business weight the late SDP chieftain carried.
Akingboye’s sudden passing has left Ondo State’s political landscape rattled, with allies and supporters mourning his loss while anxiously awaiting clarity on the allegations surrounding his death.
