U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for $1 billion, alleging the broadcaster attempted to interfere in the 2024 presidential election by selectively editing his speech ahead of the January 6 Capitol riot.

A letter from Trump’s lawyer, Alejandro Brito, sent to BBC Chairman Samir Shah, demands a full retraction, an apology, and compensation by Friday, warning that legal action will follow if the demands are not met. The letter claims the Panorama documentary disseminated “fabricated statements,” causing Trump “overwhelming financial and reputational harm” worldwide.

The scandal previously led to the resignations of BBC Director General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness, amid accusations of editorial manipulation. Trump labeled the BBC a “corrupt organisation” and called the two former executives “very dishonest people.”

In response, a BBC spokesperson said the corporation will review the letter and respond in due course. Chairman Shah admitted he is willing to apologize in person and defended the BBC, insisting that past criticisms, including a leaked memo by Michael Prescott, offered only a partial view of events.

Shah emphasized that the BBC has addressed editorial issues over the years, including publishing corrections, updating guidance, implementing leadership changes, and carrying out disciplinary actions.
