The rift between Rabiu Kwankwaso and Kano Governor Abba Yusuf stemming from Yusuf’s plan to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has deepened.
The tension between the two gladiators has been building with Kwankwaso reportedly feeling sidelined and inadequately consulted on key decisions.
Yusuf, on the other hand, seems determined to assert his independence, having secured support from most NNPP lawmakers and local government chairmen.
Yusuf, who feels defection is his political right based on consultation with the electorate and party stakeholders, obtained APC membership card from his ward in preparation for the formal defection scheduled for January 12.
Be it as it is, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has warned members who have defected or planing to defect, demanding they compensate the Movement for the support and labour invested in them.
Addressing the remaining loyalists, Kwankwaso insisted that political defections do not happen without incentives, saying “for someone to abandon his house and go elsewhere, it does not just happen without reason. These people, no doubt, have collected ‘goods’.”
Kwankwaso, an ex- Governor of the state, has also cautioned supporters against being swayed by what he referred to as “short-term gains,” noting that many defectors later regretted their actions.
He emphasised that betrayal carries lasting consequences, leaving a stain that follows individuals and their families. “The word ‘betrayer’ follows a person; him, his family and even his lineage,” he reiterated.
But the Kano House of Assembly on Friday officially endorsed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s planned defection from the NNPP, citing unresolved leadership crises and ongoing court cases that could jeopardise the governor’s mandate.
Justifying the defection moves, House Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini stated that remaining in the NNPP poses significant risks for the governor and other elected officials due to “factional disputes and multiple litigations.”
Speaking to reporters, Hussaini warned the party’s internal conflicts could lead to a repeat of the Zamfara State scenario, where the Supreme Court ruled that the APC had no valid candidates, resulting in the party losing the governorship and legislative seats.
“The NNPP is currently plagued by factional leadership disputes and multiple litigations, creating uncertainty over the validity of its structure and nominations ahead of future elections.
“There is an existing court judgment that recognises a particular faction of the NNPP. Therefore, we cannot continue to remain in the party and risk a repeat of the legal disaster that happened in Zamfara State,” Hussaini said.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, 2027 vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has warned governors against attempting to prevent him and other opposition leaders from entering their states to campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso said governors who believe they can stop opposition candidates from visiting their states are making a serious mistake, stressing that political leaders should not use their positions to restrict legitimate political activities.
The NDC vice-presidential candidate said Nigeria must remain bigger than any election or administration, suggesting that political contests should not be allowed to undermine the country’s unity or democratic process.
His comments come as the NDC intensifies its political activities and outreach ahead of the 2027 elections, with the party seeking support across different parts of the country.
Kwankwaso, who is running alongside Peter Obi on the NDC ticket, has in recent weeks been involved in political consultations and engagements across northern states as the opposition party builds its campaign structure.
The former Kano State governor said attempts by state governors to restrict opposition movements would not stop the party from engaging Nigerians and presenting its political message across the country.
He stressed that every political party and candidate should be given the opportunity to meet voters, explain their programmes and seek support without unnecessary restrictions or intimidation.
Kwankwaso’s warning adds to growing political tension ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties increasingly challenging the influence of incumbent governors and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) across the states.
Former Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Sagir Saleh, has dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Saleh, who served as deputy governor during the administration of former Governor Isa Yuguda, formally resigned his membership of the APC in a letter.
His resignation comes as efforts to settle disagreements among party members following the 2027 primary elections continue.
His departure is coming alongside those of other prominent APC members, including former two-time governorship aspirant Bala Jibrin and Sunusi Kunde, an associate of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate.
The affected members have raised concerns about the conduct of the party’s internal affairs, with some accusing the leadership of unfair treatment and alleged imposition of candidates during the primary process.
Saleh submitted his resignation to the APC chairman of Katagum Local Government Area through the chairman of Matsango Ward in Azare.
He gave personal reasons for his decision but did not disclose further details.
Jibrin, who previously served as National Auditor of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change and later sought the APC governorship ticket in Bauchi, also resigned from the party in a letter dated August 31, 2026.
His exit followed his opposition to the emergence of former Bauchi Governor Muhammad Abubakar as the APC candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Jibrin had criticised the primary process and questioned the way the candidate emerged.
Kunde also left the APC in August, submitting his resignation to the party chairman of Beti Ward in Misau Local Government Area.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election to court.
The petition is now on the notice board of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, in Osogbo. The papers went up on Monday, 7 September. Tribunal Secretary, Pefe Belemore, had said the notices would be displayed before noon.
Secretariat staff were already in the courtroom as preparations for sitting continued.
Two petitions challenge the 15 August result that returned Adeleke for another term. The APC case, marked EPT/OS/GOV/01/2026, was filed by its candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, against Adeleke, the Accord Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The Peoples Democratic Party case, marked EPT/OS/GOV/02/2026, was filed by Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola against Adeleke, INEC and Accord.
