The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Nollywood actress Angela Okorie in an ongoing case involving alleged criminal defamation and cyberstalking.

The bail was approved on Friday and set at ₦5 million.

Justice Emeka Nwite made the decision after hearing submissions from both the prosecution and the defence. The ruling followed Okorie’s re-arraignment on an amended seven-count charge before the court.

Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, the same judge had ordered that the actress be remanded at the Suleja Prison in Niger State after her initial arraignment.

That order was given while the court ruled on an oral bail request made by Okorie’s lawyer, Alex Ejesieme (SAN), shortly after she pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge brought by the police.

At the time, the court directed that Okorie, who is a single mother of one, remain in custody until January 30, when a formal bail application would be considered.

The actress, whose address was listed as 1 Henry Montero Street, Lekki Palm City, Ajah, Lagos, is standing trial under Charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/278/2025.

According to the police, Okorie allegedly worked with Ifeoma Mbonu, who is currently at large, to commit cyberstalking and defamation. The allegations stem from social media posts on Instagram and TikTok in which fellow actress Mercy Johnson Okojie was described as a “blood sucking demon”.

The alleged offences were said to have taken place in 2024 and are being prosecuted under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015.

After Okorie entered a not-guilty plea, the prosecuting counsel, Victor Okoye, asked the court to remand her in prison and set a date for the prosecution to begin its case.

Okoye told the court that the actress failed to respond to police invitations and had earlier violated the terms of an administrative bail.

“The administrative bail granted the defendant has since expired upon her arraignment,” Okoye argued.

He also asked the court to insist on a formal bail application, allowing the prosecution to present documents supporting its opposition to bail.

In response, Okorie’s lawyer objected to her remand, telling the court that his client was not given enough time to prepare for the case

He explained that although the charge was filed in July 2025, Okorie only received a copy of it about one hour before the court session began. He added that she was arrested in Lagos the day before and taken to Abuja without prior notice.

“My client was never informed about the case in court,” Ejesieme said, claiming that the police also prevented him from having access to Okorie for proper consultation.

The defence lawyer asked the court to allow Okorie to continue on the earlier administrative bail or to release her into his custody. He said this would enable her to make arrangements for her child in Lagos and properly file a formal bail application.
