President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees with ambitions to contest in upcoming general elections to step down from their positions on or before March 31.
The directive, aimed at preventing governance from being distracted by political activities, was communicated through a circular issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
According to the Presidency, the move is designed to ensure that public office holders do not combine official responsibilities with campaign pursuits, thereby safeguarding the focus and integrity of the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
The order applies broadly to key government officials, including ministers, commissioners, special advisers, and heads of government agencies who intend to run for elective positions in the next electoral cycle.
By enforcing the resignation deadline, the administration seeks to eliminate potential conflicts of interest and ensure that governance remains efficient and undistracted as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of future elections.
