The Nigeria Police Force has forwarded the case file on the alleged extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) for prosecution.
The development follows the dismissal of officers implicated in the incident by the Police Service Commission (PSC).
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this on Sunday during a press briefing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, describing the move as a significant step toward ensuring justice.
According to him, the case file has been formally transmitted to the AGF’s office for vetting and prosecution, with the police pledging full cooperation throughout the legal process.
“The case file has been formally forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for vetting and prosecution. The Force will cooperate fully with the AGF to ensure that this matter is pursued to its logical conclusion in a court of competent jurisdiction,” he said.
Adejobi confirmed that the PSC had reviewed and ratified the recommendation for the dismissal of ASP Nuhu and three other officers found culpable in the killing, noting that their dismissal takes immediate effect.
He added that the affected officers have also been arrested and are currently in police custody.
“Following the conclusion of investigations, ASP Nuhu and three other members of his team have been arrested and are currently in custody. Internal disciplinary procedures have been concluded against all officers found culpable.
“The Force wishes to state clearly that all indicted officers have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force. The Police Service Commission has ratified this recommendation, and their dismissal takes immediate effect,” he stated.
The police spokesman explained that the action was based on findings from an investigation launched after the April 26 incident, which revealed that the officers’ conduct amounted to professional misconduct, abuse of office, and actions capable of causing a breach of public peace.
Providing details of the incident, Adejobi said the deceased had received a parcel from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, which he intended to waybill to Sapele. The parcel was later discovered to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm ammunition.
He said the discovery led to a citizen’s arrest before police operatives arrived at the scene.
However, contrary to established rules of engagement, the team leader, ASP Nuhu, allegedly shot the already apprehended and unarmed suspect.
“The Force wishes to be unequivocal: no criminal suspicion, however grave, justifies extrajudicial action. Every suspect is entitled to due process under the law,” he said.
Adejobi further disclosed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals linked to the incident, including the driver who delivered the parcel and two vigilante members.
Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to accountability, he assured the public and the victim’s family that justice would be served.
“The Nigeria Police Force does not shield officers who violate the law. No rank or position places any officer above accountability,” he added.
He urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as the legal process continues.
