The House of Representatives has pushed for tighter enforcement of rules governing the location and operation of gas outlets in the wake of a recent explosion in Apapa.
The call followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance moved by Rep. Adesola Samuel Adedayo, who raised alarm over an explosion that occurred in the early hours of 5 May 2026 along Adeleye Street within Apapa federal constituency of Lagos state.
According to the lawmaker, the incident took place at a construction site situated behind two shops, leaving a trail of destruction. Nearby buildings were badly damaged, several people sustained injuries, and financial losses were significant. Among those affected was a student reportedly heading to school at the time.
He acknowledged the prompt intervention of residents and the Lagos State Fire Service, whose efforts helped rescue victims and ensure their evacuation to Gbagada General Hospital and other nearby medical facilities.
The incident has renewed concerns about the frequency of gas explosions in densely populated and lower-income neighbourhoods, where safety standards are often poorly enforced. Lawmakers warned that continued lapses in regulation could expose more communities to serious danger.
The House unanimously adopted the motion, directing relevant authorities to ensure full compliance with existing safety guidelines for gas facilities nationwide.
The house also instructed the National Emergency Management Agency and other bodies to provide immediate assistance and relief materials to those affected by the Apapa explosion.
