NYSC to enforce new certificate requirement for corps members from 2026 Batch B
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has said that all prospective corps members will, from the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 Orientation Course, be required to present a compliance certificate from the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) as part of their mobilisation process.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at the 2026 Batch ‘B’ pre-mobilisation workshop with the theme, “Strengthening Institutional Accountability and Compliance in the NYSC Mobilization Process.”
Nafiu said the new requirement was part of efforts to strengthen accountability, curb certificate fraud and ensure that only qualified graduates are mobilised for national service.
“In line with our drive towards greater accountability, I wish to officially announce that, effective from the 2026 Batch B Stream 1 Orientation Course, the NYSC shall enforce the Federal Executive Council’s directive mandating that all PCMs obtain and present a compliance certificate from the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD),” he said.
He added, “This policy is a critical step towards curbing credential fraud and ensuring that only genuinely qualified graduates are mobilised.”
The NYSC boss explained that the reform was in line with a directive of FEC aimed at sanitising the mobilisation process and restoring greater credibility to the scheme.
Nafiu stressed that the mobilisation exercise was a shared responsibility involving the NYSC, Corps Producing Institutions, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and other regulatory agencies, noting that effective collaboration remained key to maintaining the integrity of the process.
“The mobilisation process is not the responsibility of NYSC alone; it is a collective enterprise. When we work in synergy, we ease the path for our prospective corps members, ensuring that their transition from student to national service member is smooth, transparent, and credible,” he said.
He called on institutions to ensure strict adherence to mobilisation guidelines, warning against the manipulation or distortion of graduate records submitted for service.
Nafiu also urged stakeholders to embrace innovation and digital reforms that would enhance efficiency and transparency in the system.
“In today’s rapidly evolving world, the only constant is change. The NYSC mobilisation process must not be static or resistant to innovation,” he stated.
He said the scheme would continue to strengthen internal control mechanisms and deepen the use of digital verification tools to improve monitoring and accountability.
According to him, JAMB remains central to the authentication of admission and graduation records, while other agencies are expected to provide policy guidance and enforcement support to ensure credibility in the mobilisation process.
The NYSC Director-General described the workshop as a critical platform for addressing challenges affecting mobilisation and building consensus on sustainable reforms.
“As we commence this workshop, let us remember that our collective efforts today will shape the future of NYSC mobilisation and, by extension, our nation’s future,” he said.
Also speaking, the Director of Corps Mobilisation, Mrs Rachel Idaewor, said the workshop was designed to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders involved in the mobilisation process and improve service delivery.
She described the pre-mobilisation workshop as a “vital platform for fostering collaboration among the NYSC, Corps Producing Institutions, and other critical stakeholders.”
Idaewor noted that while progress had been made in recent years, there was still a need to improve efficiency and address emerging challenges in the mobilisation value chain.
“This workshop’s theme, ‘Strengthening Institutional Accountability and Compliance in the NYSC Mobilisation Process for Effective Service Delivery,’ highlights our commitment to improving the processes that underpin our mobilisation strategy,” she said.
She identified technology as a key driver of reform, adding that digital systems would help streamline operations and improve data accuracy in the mobilisation process.
“By utilising advanced data management systems and digital tools, we can streamline our processes and ensure that we are maximising our potential for success in mobilising our youth for national service,” she stated.
Idaewor also highlighted the roles of key partners, including the Federal Ministry of Education, JAMB, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the National Universities Commission (NUC) and SIDMACH Technologies, in safeguarding the integrity of the system.
She urged Student Affairs Officers in tertiary institutions to ensure accuracy in the records submitted to NYSC, stressing that integrity at the institutional level remained crucial to the success of the mobilisation process.
“We should all come together as a cohesive team, drawing inspiration from our past successes while embracing the challenges that lie ahead,” she said.
The workshop had in attendance representatives of Corps Producing Institutions, JAMB officials, regulatory agencies and senior NYSC officials from across the country.

The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Rt. Hon. Memounatou Ibrahima, has described Ghana’s decision to elect a woman as Vice-President as an inspiration for women and girls across West Africa.
Speaker Ibrahima stated this when she met Ghana’s Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on the sidelines of the ongoing Second Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament and the Second 2026 Parliamentary Seminar in Accra.
She expressed appreciation to the Vice-President for receiving her and for the speech she delivered at the opening of the parliamentary proceedings.
Ibrahima also commended President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana, saying the country’s choice to have a woman occupy the vice presidency sent an important message across the region.
She said: “By entrusting the vice presidency to a woman, Ghana sends a powerful message to our entire region: that Africa believes in women’s leadership. Her journey is an inspiration to millions of young girls”.
The meeting also focused on the 25th anniversary of the ECOWAS Parliament and its core responsibilities, including issuing opinions on matters referred to it, examining the Community’s budget and conducting oversight missions.
The two leaders further discussed issues affecting young people across the region, particularly the harmonisation of curricula and mutual recognition of academic diplomas among ECOWAS member states.
Ibrahima said making it possible for qualifications obtained in one ECOWAS country to be recognised in another will strengthen regional integration and make free movement more meaningful.
She said a graduate from Lomé, Abuja or Dakar should be able to have their skills recognised in Accra, describing such recognition as an important step towards building an ECOWAS of the Peoples.
The Speaker thanked the Ghanaian authorities for their hospitality and the organisation of the parliamentary session.
The meeting forms part of the ECOWAS Parliament’s engagement with regional leaders as the institution marks its 25th anniversary and pursues integration priorities, including youth mobility and the recognition of academic qualifications across West Africa.
Rt. Hon. Ibrahima is the first woman to serve as Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament since its establishment in 2000, having been elected to lead the sixth legislature in May 2024.

BREAKING: Body of UNIZIK Pupil Swept Away by Awka Flood Recovered, Viral ‘Found Alive’ Claim Debunked
The body of Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Primary School in Awka, Anambra State, who was swept away by floodwaters, has been recovered, authorities and multiple Nigerian news outlets have reported.
The development came on Wednesday, September 23, a day after the child went missing when a vehicle carrying schoolchildren was overwhelmed by floodwaters along the Awka–Nibo–Nise–Enugwu-Ukwu Ring Road, also known as the Nibo–Isiagu Road.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, September 22, following hours of heavy rainfall that triggered flash flooding across parts of Awka. Videos from the scene showed vehicles trapped in rapidly rising water and schoolchildren attempting to escape.
According to the Anambra State Police Command, Safe School Operatives, working alongside local residents, rescued seven schoolchildren and two adults from the affected area. The survivors were taken to hospital for medical attention.
Success, however, remained missing after the rescue operation.
A family member later described the pupil as courageous, saying he reportedly broke a window of the vehicle, creating an escape route that enabled some of the other occupants to get out. Success himself was subsequently swept away by the floodwaters.
Viral ‘Found Alive’ Report Sparks False Hope
On Wednesday, social media users began widely circulating a claim that Success had been found alive beneath debris.
A post shared on X claimed that the boy had been rescued alive from under a large pile of debris and vegetation.
The post was accompanied by emotional video footage showing rescuers pulling a child from beneath rubble, prompting widespread celebration and relief online.
However, reports subsequently indicated that the viral video was unrelated to the Awka flood incident.
The footage reportedly showed another child who survived a separate incident involving a building collapse in Awgu, Enugu State.
The conflicting reports generated confusion among members of the public who had been following the search for Success.
Authorities Confirm Recovery of Body.
The Awka South Local Government chairman, Prince Chinedu Okafor, has since confirmed that Success’s body was recovered.
Okafor reportedly made the confirmation while at Amaku Teaching Hospital, where the rescued children were receiving treatment. TheCable and Independent Newspaper Nigeria also reported the recovery, citing the local government chairman and other sources.
TheCable reported that the boy’s body was recovered during the search operation, while the other children remained in stable condition and were receiving medical care.
The recovery brings an end to the search for the young pupil, but also turns what many had hoped would be a miraculous rescue into a tragic loss for his family and community.
Flooding Raises Fresh Safety Concerns in Anambra
The tragedy has renewed concerns about the dangers posed by flash floods in Anambra, particularly along roads used by schoolchildren, motorists and other commuters.
The Anambra State Government said emergency agencies, including the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the state fire service, mobilised after the school bus became trapped in the flood.
Following the latest flooding incidents, residents have also been urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways and to move to safer areas whenever conditions become dangerous.
For the Ezenwafor family, the recovery of Success’s body ends a desperate search that began after he left for school on Tuesday morning.
The incident has also highlighted the potentially fatal speed and force of flash floods, particularly when vehicles become trapped on flooded roads.
As of the latest reports on Wednesday, September 23, authorities have confirmed the recovery of Success Ezenwafor’s body. The viral claim that he was found alive under debris does not appear to relate to the Awka incident.

PETROAN said it summoned an emergency meeting with its National Executive Council after the NMDPRA raised the fuel under-dispensing issue.
The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has directed its members nationwide to immediately inspect their dispensing meters following concerns raised by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) over under-dispensing of petroleum products at retail outlets.
PETROAN National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme.
He said the association summoned an emergency meeting with its National Executive Council on Tuesday after the NMDPRA raised the issue, with the meeting lasting until about 10 pm.
“PETRON circulated a message around the country, calling our members to check their meters as quickly as possible,” Gillis-Harry said.
He added that several members had already begun inspecting their equipment, stressing that faulty meters could result in either under-dispensing or over-dispensing.
“Equipment can be faulty over time because of usage,” he said, recalling that he had previously lost money in his own retail business because a faulty meter was dispensing more fuel than customers paid for.
Gillis-Harry assured motorists that PETROAN members would continue to ensure that customers receive the quantity of fuel displayed on the pump.
“But I can tell you that PETRON members will, at all times, insist on making sure that they sell their products one litre for one litre,” he said.
The PETROAN President also urged motorists to pay attention to the quantity displayed on dispensing meters while buying fuel and to request receipts for their purchases.
He explained that customers should know the capacity of their vehicle’s fuel tank and compare it with the quantity displayed on the dispenser.
“Oftentimes, we educate our staff to call the attention of the patron to check the meter while it is being dispensed. And also to get the customer to check after the product has been dispensed,” he said.
According to him, PETROAN also works with the Weights and Measures Division of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the NMDPRA to ensure that dispensing meters remain functional and accurate.
“PETRON consistently works with the Weights and Measures Division of the Ministry of Trade and Investment, and also the NMDPRA. These are the two regulatory authorities that ensure that our meters are functional. And they are up to date and accurate,” he said.
The NMDPRA has warned filling station operators against under-dispensing petroleum products, with outlets found short-changing consumers liable to sanctions, including the revocation of their operating licences.
Gillis-Harry said PETROAN had taken the regulator’s concerns seriously and had begun working with its members to address any possible faults.
“But we took what the NMDPRA called our attention to yesterday very seriously. And we already started working on that,” he said.
