Bandits on Sunday morning stormed Lata Nna community in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing a woman, abducting another resident and leaving several others feared dead.
Residents who spoke to the media said the attack was still ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
They said the heavily armed assailants invaded the community, firing indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes and other safe locations.
The residents decried the absence of security personnel, accusing the authorities of failing to protect the community despite repeated appeals over persistent security threats in the area.
One of the residents said, “Lata Nna is currently under attack right now by bandits.”
The latest assault comes barely a day after a resident identified as Mohammed Abubakar Ndakpada Lata was abducted by suspected bandits while returning from his farm, with his captors reportedly demanding ₦100 million ransom for his release.
Speaking to the media, a resident said the attackers killed villagers, adding that the exact number of casualties had yet to be established.
“Some people were killed. The victims were at the back of the village. They were just killed there,” the source said.
As I’m speaking with you, I have not yet confirmed the total number of people killed. However, I can confirm that one Nupe woman was killed. She had gone behind the village to fetch firewood and was attacked.
“The woman is dead. People are now searching the area, and we will know later if there are more victims. As I’m talking to you, I cannot confirm that yet.”
The resident narrated how the attack caught the community by surprise, noting that there was no security presence when the gunmen struck.
“I was in the town when I suddenly heard gunshots. I was wondering what was happening because there is no security presence in our village,” the resident said.
The gunshots were not from locally made guns. We believe the attackers came unexpectedly. The vigilantes responded, but before they got there, they confirmed that one woman had already been killed.”
The resident lamented that the latest attack was only one in a long series of invasions that have turned life in the community into a nightmare, saying kidnappings and killings have become almost a daily occurrence.
Responding to a question on whether the attack was the first on the community, the source said: “Just the day before yesterday, my uncle was kidnapped while returning from his farm. The farm is less than two kilometres from the village. Yesterday, the kidnappers called and demanded a ransom of ₦100 million.
“Yes, he is still in their custody. These attacks happen almost every day. We have repeatedly appealed to the government to establish a military camp in our community, but they keep telling us the process is ongoing. Meanwhile, people are being killed and kidnapped every day. I don’t know what is going on.”
Residents said the continued attacks have left the community living in fear, as armed bandits reportedly move freely through the area while villagers remain vulnerable to repeated kidnappings and killings.
A middle-aged man, identified as Emmanuel Akposi, has been declared wanted after allegedly dousing his elderly mother, Mrs Atim Akposi, also known as Atim Eyo, with fuel and setting her abl@ze in Ojo community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, leaving the woman with severe b¥rns. She was initially taken to a community health centre in Ojo before being transferred to Akamkpa General Hospital and later the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where she reportedly d+ed in the early hours of Monday.
Family sources said the att@ck followed years of accusations by Emmanuel that his mother was a witch and responsible for the d+ath of his child.
According to reports , his elder brother, Eyo Akposi, alleged that Emmanuel had repeatedly accused their mother of witchcraft, claiming that some pastors had told him she was responsible for the child’s death.
Eyo said Emmanuel had confronted their mother several times and allegedly attempted to harm her before the fatal att@ck.
According to him, Emmanuel entered his mother’s room on the day of the incident and allegedly tried to strangle her. When she resisted, he reportedly hit her, causing her to fall, before pouring fuel on her and setting her abl@ze. He then fled the scene.
Neighbours reportedly raised the alarm and rushed the victim to the hospital. Eyo said he was alerted after receiving a video of the attack and instructed relatives to transfer her to UCTH for further treatment, where she later d*ed.
The matter has been reported to the Uyanga Divisional Police Station, Akamkpa, which has commenced investigation and launched a manhunt for the suspect.
Ten police personnel attached to the 44 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Abuja, on special duty in Makuku, Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, have reportedly been killed by bandits following after a gun battle.
The officers were among security personnel deployed to the area to confront armed bandits operating in the community.
According to a police situation report (SITREP) the attack occurred at Makuku village in Sakaba LGA, with the aftermath of the gun battle revealing the deaths of 10 police personnel and two civilians.
The report, dated August 10, 2026, stated that information available to the police at about 7:40 p.m. indicated that the armed bandits had killed the personnel following the gun duel between the Mobile Police Force and the attackers.
Following the incident, a team of policemen led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Sakaba Division, DSP Umaru Bagudu, reportedly visited the scene.
The team was said to have discovered the bodies of the slain officers lying at the Makuku area.
The deceased police personnel were identified as ASP Bala Buba, 43; Inspector Saminu Sulaiman, 40; Inspector Solomon Jatau, 39; Inspector Ayuba Hassain, 38; Inspector Umar Yahuza, 37; Inspector Auwal Sani, 38; Sergeant Jimoh Momo, 35; Corporal Ukpong Otrukmj, 34; Inspector Adamu Abdullahi, 35; and Inspector Abdullahi Magaji, 43.
The 10 officers were all attached to the 44 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Abuja, and were serving on special duty in the area.
The police report further revealed that two civilians were also killed during the attack.
They were identified as Mohammadu Magwawara, 50, and Muhammadu Tiritiri, 45.
Another civilian, Shehu Abubakar, 41, sustained serious gunshot injuries during the attack.
The bodies of the deceased were subsequently evacuated to the General Hospital, Dirin Daji, where they were all confirmed dead.
The injured Shehu Abubakar was, however, referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, for further medical treatment.
Beyond the heavy casualties, the armed bandits were also reported to have seized a significant quantity of firearms and ammunition belonging to the security personnel.
According to the report, the attackers reportedly carted away one RPG rifle, two riot guns, 10 AK-47 rifles, as well as other arms and ammunition following the gun duel.
Gunmen have kidnapped a businessman, Oreoluwa Osunuga, who is the son-in-law of ex- Managing Director of the defunct Monitor newspaper, Ayo Akinyemi.
It was gathered that Osunuga, who operates a poultry farm, was kidnapped in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State on Sunday afternoon.
The gunmen reportedly accosted him as he exited the farm to buy fuel and deliver poultry products.
The incident was reported to the police at the Ikenne Divison Headquarters who visited the scene and recovered the victim’s 2017 Toyota Highlander vehicle.
The assailants have since reportedly contacted the victim’s family and made a N500 million ransom demand.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Commissioner, Bode Ojajuni said, “We got the report of the kidnapping case and we are currently doing our investigation and making progress to rescue the victims.”
