The Kano State High Court No. 2 has sentenced a man from Jigawa State, Auwalu Adamu, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of culpable homicide.

Adamu, a resident of Yantaji Village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, was also sentenced to life imprisonment for armed robbery.

Justice Yusuf Ubale handed down the judgment on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, following Adamu’s prosecution by the Kano State Government under Sections 221(b) and 298(c) of the Penal Code, Cap. 105, Laws of Kano State 1991, as amended.

The case stemmed from an incident that occurred on July 31, 2021, at Kwarin Makera, Gamoji Village, in Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State.

Adamu was accused of attacking Saleh Audu Barau at about 8 p.m. and repeatedly stabbing him in the face with a knife.

During the trial, the prosecution called five witnesses and presented its case before the court.

Adamu later took the witness stand in his own defence but did not call any additional witnesses.

After considering the evidence and submissions of both the prosecution and defence, Justice Ubale found Adamu guilty of the offences and imposed the respective sentences.

Reacting to the judgment, Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, commended the Chief State Counsel, Barrister Hannatu Abdulmalik, for her professionalism and commitment to the prosecution of the case.

Maude said the judgment underscored the state government’s commitment to pursuing justice and protecting the lives and property of residents.

He also reaffirmed the ministry’s readiness to work with the judiciary, security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the diligent prosecution of criminal cases in accordance with the law.
