Kwara-based Activist Writes Nigerian Police, DSS; Seeks Support For October 1 Peaceful Protest

Comrade Mashood Lanre Osho, a Kwara-based human rights activist and anti-corruption advocate, has submitted a letter to the Nigerian police and Department of State Services in the state, notifying them of a planned peaceful protest on October 1, 2024.

The protest, scheduled to coincide with Nigeria’s Independence Day, seeks to draw attention to the pressing issues of hunger and food price inflation in the state.

Osho has appealed for their support and intervention to ensure a safe and successful event.

The letter reads in part, “I am writing to inform you of my intention to organize a peaceful protest of one million Kwara State youths on October 1st, 2024, to draw attention to the pressing issue of hunger and food price inflation in the state.”

According to Osho, the protest is a last resort, as they have been urging traditional rulers and religious leaders to meet with the Kwara State Governor to find a lasting solution to this crisis.

“I am copying this letter to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Ilorin, and other relevant stakeholders, as we believe that their intervention is crucial in resolving this matter amicably,” he said.

He said contrary to misconceptions, his decision not to participate in the recent protests was due to the commitment to maintain peace and harmony in the state, as consistently advocated by the Emir and religious leaders.

“However, with Kwara State now leading Kogi State in food price inflation, we can no longer remain silent. We appeal to you, Honourable Commissioner, to use your good.

“We believe that a peaceful resolution can still be achieved, and we are willing to work with all stakeholders to ensure that the protest remains peaceful and our sole motivation is the welfare of the Kwara State youths.

“Please acknowledge receipt of this letter and indicate your willingness to facilitate a meeting with the Governor and other stakeholders to address this pressing issue,” he added.
