A disturbing incident occurred during the Saturday by-election for the Ovia Federal Constituency of Edo, where a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polling agent was beaten up by angry voters at Ozolua Model Primary School, Iguobazuwa East Ward, Ovia South-West Local Government Area of the state.
The PDP agent allegedly refused to release the voters’ Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), sparking the wrath of the irate crowd.
However, men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), deployed to maintain law and order during the exercise, quickly stepped in and rescued the polling agent.
The incident highlights the tensions that can arise during electoral processes and underscores the importance of effective conflict resolution mechanisms and security presence during elections.
Meanwhile, Governor Monday Okpebholo, has expressed concerns over the slow performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the ongoing by-election in Edo Central Senatorial District.
Okpebholo said this while casting his vote at Ward 2 Polling Unit 1 in Udomi Primary School in Esan Central Local Government.
Speaking with journalists shortly after casting his vote, Okpebholo said that although the exercise was peaceful, the BVAS machines deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were causing unnecessary delay.
