Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima will lead the delegation to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which opens on 23 September 2025 in New York.
The theme for this year’s debate, “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights”, underscores the UN’s continuing role in fostering cooperation and shared solutions to global challenges.
According to a statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the VP will be joined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, along with other senior ministers and government officials.
The Vice President is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement on 24 September, highlighting the country’s contributions to peace, security, and climate action, as well as its commitment to multilateral cooperation.
Nigeria’s participation will focus on key priorities including economic growth, human rights, humanitarian assistance, disarmament, and counter-terrorism. The Vice President is also expected to underline the importance of international partnerships in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Beyond the main debate, Nigeria will take part in several high-level meetings. These include a conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian question, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia; a roundtable on energy and security in the Gulf of Guinea; and the Forward Africa Leaders Symposium, which will examine digital transformation, fintech, and trade policy under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Nigeria’s presence at these discussions reflects its longstanding commitment to multilateralism and to shaping solutions to pressing regional and global issues.
