The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies has expressed serious concern regarding recent challenges in the administration of national examinations by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
During a review session held on Monday, June 2, 2025, in Abuja, members of the committee queried the Head of WAEC Nigeria, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, about procedural lapses that they believe have affected the integrity and smooth delivery of exams across the country.
Committee Chairman, Rep. Oforji Oboku, member representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, began the session by acknowledging the dedication of lawmakers present and highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional systems to support credible academic assessments.
After extensive discussions, the committee adopted a set of resolutions aimed at improving the council’s performance. Among them was a request for a comprehensive review of WAEC’s digital systems, with special emphasis on access and reliability in remote communities, as well as a forward-looking plan for adopting computer-based testing.
Additionally, WAEC was instructed to furnish the National Assembly with documentation on its internal procedures and detailed records addressing examination integrity and past breaches.
