A 27-year-old woman, Khanyisile Mndayi, is reportedly in a coma and critical condition after being stabbed over 20 times by her boyfriend in front of their children on Sunday.

The attack reportedly occurred at their residence in Berea, Johannesburg, South Africa.

According to a Facebook post by one Gillian Mogale, Mndayi arrived home late from her shift and was allegedly subjected to physical assault and ultimately stabbed multiple times by her boyfriend, identified as Bongani.

“Upon her arrival home at Metropolitan flat in Berea, she was insulted, beaten, and ultimately stabbed multiple times right in front of her kids by her boyfriend, BONGANI, who is known as Luuk De Jong on Facebook. She is currently fighting for her life in hospital.”

A non-profit organisation, Women For Change, working to combat gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa, said in a statement on Monday that the boyfriend fled the scene after locking the injured Mndayi and her children indoors.

The statement read, “Khanyisile Vanessa Mndayi, 27, was stabbed more than twenty times, allegedly by her boyfriend, in front of their children on May 26, 2024. Khanyisile is currently in a coma, fighting for her life.

“It is alleged that the boyfriend stabbed Khanysile multiple times in their home in Berea, Johannesburg. He then locked Khanysile and the children, who witnessed the gruesome attack, in the house.”

He was, however, arrested when he allegedly returned with the intention of inflicting further harm, the statement revealed.

It added, “The boyfriend took his belongings, leaving the severely injured Khanysile and the children behind.

“Neighbours alerted the police, and when the boyfriend came back to allegedly continue to stab Khanyisile, police were able to arrest him.

“We pray for Khanysisile’s healing and recovery and call for justice for her and her children!”

Recall that a United Kingdom-based Nigerian man, Olubunmi Abodunde, had in April beat his wife, Taiwo, to death with their son’s skateboard.

The couple, who had three children, were reported to have arrived in the UK from Nigeria in 2022 and always clashed over alleged affairs and arguments about bills.

A member of the House of Representatives from Kaduna North and Chairman, Committee on Banking Regulations, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, has disclosed that his father, Nasir El-Rufai’s continued detention shows that Nigeria’s democratic journey is far from complete.

Bello noted that democracy can only thrive in Nigeria when the country’s leadership is accountable.

El-Rufai has been in custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, since he was arrested at the Abuja airport earlier in the year.

The commission had arraigned him for corruption while he was governor of Kaduna State.

However, posting on X, Bello wrote: “Today, we celebrate the enduring strength of our democracy and the collective voice of the Nigerian people. Democracy thrives when leadership is accountable, citizens are empowered, and every voice is heard.

“As we commemorate this important day, we must also acknowledge that while our democracy continues to endure, the abuse of citizens’ rights remains a troubling reality.

“The true test of any democracy is not simply the conduct of elections, but its commitment to the rule of law, due process, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.

“The continued unlawful detention of my father, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, alongside the experiences of many other Nigerians who have faced similar violations, serves as a reminder that our democratic journey is far from complete.

“On this Democracy Day, let us recommit ourselves to building a nation where justice prevails, institutions are strengthened, and the rights of every citizen are respected and protected.”

The National Leader of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, on Friday held a closed-door meeting with the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, amid recent crises in the party.

Dickson made this known in a statement on his official X handle, revealing that the meeting, which lasted nearly three hours, was attended by Obi and other senior party leaders.

“I just received my brother, colleague, and partner in the New Nigerian Project, His Excellency Mr Peter Gregory Obi, CON, our presidential candidate, who, together with some distinguished leaders of our party, held a closed-door meeting which lasted about three hours.

“In the course of that meeting, we reviewed the activities of our party and discussed a few recent issues that have been a source of concern to all sides, and we amicably resolved all the issues.

“We have always been on the same page on the bigger picture, i.e., winning the elections for all candidates of our party and rescuing Nigeria from the misgovernance of the APC-led government. However, a few issues have arisen, and we have agreed on how to handle them moving forward.

“I want to use this opportunity again to call on all members of our party to stop the bickering and name-calling and focus on the bigger picture.

“Both His Excellency Peter Obi and I, as well as other leaders and stakeholders of our party, will continue to consult and engage with one another to address and resolve concerns, strengthen the unity and cohesion of our party, and ensure that we remain focused on our shared mission of rescuing Nigeria and building a better future for all.”

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has reportedly collapsed and was subsequently taken to a hospital following a confrontation with the Nigerian police during a Democracy Day protest.

Witnesses at the scene alleged that Sowore collapsed after police operatives moved to disperse protesters gathered to demonstrate against insecurity, economic hardship and what they described as poor governance, at the Phase 1 Bridge before Federal Secretariate.

The protest, which attracted scores of activists and civil society groups, was disrupted after security personnel deployed tear gas canisters in an apparent attempt to break up the gathering.

It was reported that chaos erupted as protesters scampered for safety amid clouds of tear gas. In the confusion, Sowore was reportedly affected by the tear gas and subsequently lost consciousness.

Supporters and fellow activists immediately rushed to his aid and evacuated him from the protest ground. Sources close to the activist said he regained consciousness while being transported away from the scene in a vehicle.

Following the incident, Sowore has now been reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital for further examination and treatment.

The incident heightened tensions at the Democracy Day protest, where demonstrators had gathered to express concerns over rising insecurity, economic challenges and governance issues in the country.
