President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered a nationwide mourning period and summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a London hospital on Sunday at the age of 82.
In a solemn tribute personally signed and released Sunday evening, Tinubu described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman” whose life and legacy left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s national history.
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu announced. 
The President also confirmed that Buhari would be given full state honours, with a special FEC session scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, dedicated entirely to memorializing the former leader.
Reflecting on Buhari’s life of service, Tinubu wrote:
“Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life. He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”
He praised Buhari’s anti-corruption stance and his commitment to discipline in public service, recalling his military leadership from 1984 to 1985 and his tenure as Nigeria’s civilian President from 2015 to 2023.
“President Buhari placed the country above personal interest at every turn,” Tinubu stated.
Extending his condolences, Tinubu said he has been in close contact with Buhari’s widow, Her Excellency Aisha Buhari. He also offered prayers and sympathy to their children, the extended Buhari family, the people of Daura Emirate, and all Nigerians mourning the national loss.
“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness,” Tinubu concluded.
The presidency has assured that funeral arrangements will reflect Buhari’s towering national contributions.
