In the aftermath of the match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana of South Africa during the semifinal match in Bouaké, on Wednesday, SaharaReporters had reported that no fewer than five Nigerians dead after watching the match.

A statement released by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on Saturday, outlined some tips to help citizens prioritise their health and well-being while enjoying football matches or any other intense activities.

The statement outlined the tips as follows: “Know Your Limits: Understand your physical limitations and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any underlying health conditions before engaging in activities that could potentially exacerbate them.

“Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Crowded poorly ventilated hot environments should be avoided with attention to good hydration. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, and ensure you drink plenty of water and eat nutritious foods to keep your body fueled and hydrated, especially during prolonged periods of sitting and watching the game.

“Take Regular Breaks: Stand up, stretch, and move around periodically to prevent stiffness and promote circulation. This can also help maintain alertness and prevent fatigue. Maintain Good Posture: Sit in a comfortable chair with proper back support and avoid slouching to reduce strain on your muscles and spine.

“Stay Calm and Relaxed: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or mindfulness to manage stress and emotions during intense moments in the game.

“Be Prepared for Emergencies: Familiarise yourself with the location of medical facilities and emergency exits at the venue, and know how to access help quickly if needed. Contact the Lagos Emergency Medical Team, LASAMBUS, at 767 or 112 toll-free line in case of a medical emergency.”

Ex-Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, has predicted that Arsenal will not defend their Premier League title next season.

Scholes, speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, said Mikel Arteta’s men could finish in fourth position.

He however tipped United and Liverpool to challenge for the title.

“I think Manchester United will have a chance under Michael (Carrick), if they do some good business,” Scholes said.

“Liverpool, I expect them to go again. Man City have a good time, but they will have a new manager.

“People are expecting Arsenal to go and dominate. I just don’t see that. I’m struggling to see a brilliant team that will go on and dominate.

“I don’t think it will be a massive surprise if Arsenal finish third or fourth.”

Arsenal is planning to begin discussions with Atletico Madrid regarding a transfer for Julian Alvarez, as reported by sources in Spain.

Barcelona seems to be leading the race to acquire Alvarez during the summer transfer window, with the Argentine international reportedly favoring a transfer to the Spanish champions.

Nevertheless, Barcelona has yet to reach an agreement on a transfer fee for Alvarez, and RAC1 indicated on Tuesday that their initial offer of €100 million (£86.4m) has been turned down by Atletico.

As per AS, Atletico is dissatisfied with Barcelona’s public pursuit of Alvarez and is now ‘blocking’ the 26-year-old’s transfer to Camp Nou.

The report suggests that Arsenal has been in communication with Alvarez’s agent, and the Premier League champions are set to commence formal negotiations with Atletico, who are demanding a transfer fee of €150m (£129.6m).

Atletico has firmly stated that Alvarez is not available for transfer, and in response to Arsenal’s recent interest in the former Manchester City forward, a representative from the Spanish club informed Libertad Digital on Tuesday: ‘Two weeks ago it was PSG, last week Barcelona, now Arsenal. We are counting on Julian for the upcoming season.’

Meanwhile, Atletico is preparing for the possibility of Alvarez’s departure, and AS reports that the club has already inquired about signing Victor Osimhen from Galatasaray.

After spending a season on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, Osimhen made a permanent move to the Turkish club last summer for €75m (£63m).
