…as club eye school, hospital project for adopted community

By Gloria Ikibah

It was an evening of celebration and reflection as the Rotary Club of Abuja Unity marked its one-year anniversary with an inspiring keynote address delivered by Rotarian Lovina Okorn-Ntui, a member of the Rotary Club of Abuja Kubwa and recipient of the Star Award.

Speaking on the theme “Unity in Service: One Year of Impactful Service to Humanity,” Rotarian Okorn-Ntui commended the club’s immediate past president, Rotarian Adebayo, describing him as “a man of calibre and capacity, with passion and commitment.”

Reflecting on the essence of Rotary, Okorn-Ntui reminded members that true service begins with building relationships: “Whether you came into Rotary to travel, to network, to build relationships or to serve humanity, you must first build a relationship. The founder of Rotary started with relationship-building, and from that came community service.”

Quoting the Rotary Four-Way Test, she urged members to live by its principles—truth, fairness, goodwill and friendship—rather than reciting them mechanically.

“If we live the Four-Way Test and the Object of Rotary, it will not only transform our clubs but also our lives and communities,” she said.

Rotarian Okorn-Ntui emphasised the importance of unity and shared responsibility within the club: “The president is just one person. We have the secretary, treasurer, project chair, and every member of the club—each has a role to play. For us to succeed, we must work in unity, harmony, and agreement.”

Drawing from her personal Rotary journey, she shared how leadership had transformed her confidence: “I used to be a very shy person, but serving as club president helped me grow. In Rotary, you lead volunteers—captains of industry and professionals. You must learn to persuade and unite, not command.”

She also reminded members of the core Rotary principle of service above self:

You serve without expecting any reward. If you don’t have a heart to give, Rotary is not for you. But when you start right, the blessings will follow.”

Commending the Rotary Club of Abuja Unity for its achievements, she praised the club’s community projects and partnerships:

“You have adopted two communities and executed impactful projects, including the maternal and child health initiative in Dutse. The presence of Rotary is visible here, and that tells a story of service and commitment.”

Highlighting challenges that can hinder club growth, Rotarian Okon-Ntui pointed out issues such as poor communication, lack of trust, and limited teamwork: “We must communicate clearly, be open, transparent, and inclusive. Let us carry everyone along in all we do.”

She lauded President Uche Amanambu for her leadership style, noting “the touch of a woman” in the beautification and reorganisation of the Rotary Centre, saying: “What value are you leaving behind? Everyone has footprints to leave, everyone has value to add.”

She therefore called on members to serve with empathy and compassion: “We are all interconnected. Unity in service means serving one another with love, patience, and understanding. That is the true spirit of Rotary.”

The Club President, Rotarian Dr Uche Amanambu reflected on the club’s achievements and outlined ambitious plans to expand its impact through education and healthcare initiatives.

Speaking during the celebration, Dr Amanambu expressed pride in the club’s progress since its inception.

“Rotary Club of Abuja Unity started a year ago, and we have done so much, especially in our adopted community, which is not far from here. We’ve carried out several projects—running medical tests, supporting mothers and children—but the community has neither a school nor a hospital. Our plan is to build both”, she said

She highlighted the club’s strong participation in Rotary’s global initiatives, particularly in the fight against polio.

“During the last polio campaign, we made appearances at four different times. It will interest you to know that in just one month, our club has produced one Paul Harris Fellow (PHF), and another is on the way. By the foundation dinner, two of our members would have contributed $1,000 each,” she explained.

Dr Amanambu also noted that her personal charity work complements her Rotary service.

“I run an NGO, and through it we’ve been able to support Rotary projects. I keep encouraging other NGOs to collaborate with us so we can touch more lives. If you are not a giver, you cannot be a Rotarian.”

Sharing her passion for service, she revealed how her private foundation, Fortune Liberation Centre, supports vulnerable families.

“I carry new converts, give them jobs, pay their house rent, and sponsor their children’s education. I also settle hospital bills. My life has been a life of service,” she said.

Dr Amanambu further mentioned efforts to extend Rotary membership to Nigerians in the diaspora, including her own children. “My son is going to be a Rotarian abroad. We plan to pin him online. Many of our members support from overseas—they contribute financially even if they don’t attend meetings,” she added.

On the global fight against polio, the club president underscored Rotary’s continued commitment.

“When you talk about the eradication of polio, you cannot exclude Rotary. We’ve done so much for polio eradication. Even though Nigeria has been declared polio-free, we must continue until it’s eradicated globally because as long as it exists in Pakistan and Afghanistan, it remains a threat.

“All the funds we raise today go towards our polio fund account. Our mission is to keep serving humanity and to ensure Rotary’s impact is felt across every community”, she said.

The event was attended by Rotarians from across Abuja, friends, and partners, to celebrate not only a year of service but also the enduring values of fellowship, unity, and humanity that define Rotary.

A Nigerian man, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, has appeared before Accra Circuit Court 8 in Ghana over an alleged plot to rob three banks in the Labone area of Accra.

Maazi was arrested on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after Ghanaian police reportedly foiled the alleged robbery operation. Two other suspects were reportedly killed in a shootout with police, while another suspect escaped.

The development comes amid growing questions over the circumstances surrounding the incident, following a denial by GCB Bank that any robbery or attempted robbery took place at its Labone branch.

The Ghana Police Service had said it received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on August 13 that a gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located in the Labone area.

According to the police, officers deployed to the area spotted suspected members of the gang in vehicles parked near the banks.
Upon sighting the police, one of the vehicles sped off in an attempt to escape,” the police said.

Officers reportedly pursued the vehicle and arrested Maazi, while another occupant escaped.

The police said occupants of a second vehicle also attempted to flee while firing at officers, leading to a shootout.

“The police engaged them in a shoot-out resulting in the death of two suspects,” the Service said.

The police said two vehicles were recovered from the suspects, a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17. A blow pistol was also reportedly recovered.

However, GCB Bank subsequently denied that its Labone branch was attacked or targeted in an attempted robbery.

“GCB Bank wishes to clarify that no robbery or attempted robbery took place at our Labone Branch or on the Bank’s premises,” the bank said.

The bank added: “At no point was the branch breached, and no customer, member of staff, funds or property of the Bank was affected.”

The conflicting accounts have raised questions about the precise nature of the incident and whether the suspects were actually preparing to rob the banks as alleged by the police.

Further questions emerged after checks revealed that the Toyota Highlander bearing registration number GS 1434 18, which police identified as one of the vehicles recovered from the suspects, had been listed by Ghanaian authorities as having been impounded in 2019.

The apparent reuse of the same registration number has raised questions about the vehicle’s history and the police account of the incident.

The controversy also prompted the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana to intervene. The President of All Nigerian Communities in Ghana was reportedly sent to Ghana Police Headquarters to seek clarification over the circumstances surrounding Maazi’s arrest and the deaths of the two other suspects.

Destiny Austine Omon, media coordinator of the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana, also questioned aspects of the police account, including the location of the alleged robbery, the weapon reportedly recovered and the vehicles allegedly used by the suspects.

“The environment where the robbery took place is one of the safest environments in Ghana. It is close to 37 Military Base, the Ghanian Presidency, police headquarters and cantonment.

He added: “It does not add up for armed robbers wanting to do that scale of attack to be arrested with only a pistol.”

The Ghana Police Service has maintained that its officers foiled a planned attack on the three banks, while investigations continue to establish the identities and roles of the two deceased suspects, trace the escaped suspect and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged robbery plot.

Adedeji Adeleke, father of singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) spent about N60 billion to influence voters during the Osun State governorship election.

Adeleke made the allegation in a viral video while speaking about the election, which saw his younger brother, Governor Ademola Adeleke, secure re-election for a second term.

The businessman claimed that voters in some areas were allegedly offered as much as N50,000 for their votes.

According to him, reports of the alleged spending prompted him to retreat to his room and pray for his brother’s victory.

He maintained that the Adeleke family did not spend money to influence voters on election day, insisting that Governor Adeleke’s victory reflected the choice of the electorate.

“The only reason why we defeated Oyetola is not that we are bigger or that we spent more money than him. On election day, we didn’t spend any money.

“They spent N60 billion, as we heard. In some places, they bought most votes for as high as N50,000 for a single vote.

“On the day of the election, when I heard the kind of money they were spending, I went back to my little corner in my room, and I knelt down and prayed to God.
“I said, ‘God Almighty, let people collect their money, but let them still vote for Ademola Adeleke.’”

Adeleke attributed his confidence during the election to his strong Christian faith, saying he regularly turns to the Bible for strength and guidance.

He specifically cited Isaiah 41:10, saying his faith had made him fearless and less reliant on influential individuals.

“When I need God to pray every day, I have some Bible passages and verses that I read and that I pray with. And this is part of my testimony,” he said.

He added that his strong belief in God had discouraged him from seeking patronage from powerful figures.

“That’s why you don’t see me running after people in high places or competing with people to go and visit anyone. I would rather do it in my little corner. I would rather ask God Almighty to help me,” he said.

Adeleke’s allegation has not been independently verified, and the APC has not, in the remarks provided, responded to the claim.

The comments came after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Governor Ademola Adeleke the winner of the Osun governorship election at about 7:24 a.m. on Sunday.

The newly elected Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Yekini Idiaye, has revealed why his predecessor, Blessing Agbebaku, was flushed out by lawmakers over alleged poor leadership and corruption.

Idiaye, who represents Akoko-Edo Constituency I and is a third-term lawmaker, emerged as Speaker on Monday following Agbebaku’s resignation amid moves by lawmakers to impeach him.

Addressing journalists after Monday’s plenary, Idiaye accused Agbebaku of poor leadership, alleging that his tenure was characterised by corruption and prolonged adjournments.

He said, “The House was inaugurated on the 16th of June, 2023 under the leadership of Agbebaku, and since then we have been passing through a lot of challenges, corruption here and there, adjournment here and there, sometimes for 30 days without a cause. We are not happy with his leadership style. His leadership is poor, and it has been drawing the work of the government backwards.”

Idiaye added, “That is why we removed him. We must encourage our performing governor. He is doing well, anything that will derail or stop our performing governor, we must stop it. That is why we changed him. I can assure all of you that we will do everything possible to support Governor Monday Okpebholo to move this state forward.”

Idiaye’s emergence was also said to have followed the Assembly’s zoning arrangement, which provides that when the governor is from Edo Central Senatorial District, the Speaker should come from Edo North.

Idiaye, being the oldest member from Edo North, was subsequently elected Speaker.
