Aviation employees announce date for strike, plan nationwide flight disruptions

Aviation unions in Nigeria have threatened to shut down all airports nationwide starting March 31, 2025, over the alleged assault of the Director of Aviation Security at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) by a customs officer

The unions involved in the protest include:

National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE)

Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN)

Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP)

In a joint statement signed by Ocheme Aba, Frances Akinjole, and Abdul Rasaq Saidu, the unions expressed dissatisfaction over repeated physical assaults on FAAN personnel, vowing not to tolerate further incidents.

Key Demands

Removal of the customs officer involved in the assault

Reduction in the number of customs officers operating at airports

Implementation of strict protocols to prevent future assaults

The unions stated:

“Considering the enormity and frequency of physical and psychological assaults on FAAN staff, we are compelled to take action to ensure mutual respect between FAAN personnel and security agencies at airports.”

Unless their demands are met, aviation workers will withdraw their services from March 31, leading to a nationwide shutdown of airport operations.

In reaction, Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada described the incident as a miscommunication regarding equipment movement and seating arrangements, downplaying tensions between customs officers and FAAN officials.

Overland Airways Resumes Service on Abuja-Jalingo Route, Others

Overland Airways, has resumed flight services from Abuja to Jalingo and return.

The airline has also introduced Lagos-Jalingo flights through Abuja as part of its expansion drive.

A statement by Monday Ukoha, Business Manager, Aviation & Allied Business Publications, said that Overland Airways had been the pioneer airline on the route for years, temporarily suspended flight services to the route in November 2024 due to expansion work at the airport.

The airline is now set to reconnect the two cities providing passengers with convenient and reliable travel options, the statement said.

Besides, effective April 3, 2025, the airline said it would resume three weekly flights on the Abuja-Jalingo-Abuja route.

The flights would operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, using Overland Airways’ brand-new Embraer 175 aircraft.

Also, the flights would depart Abuja to Jalingo at 10:00am and Jalingo to Abuja at 11:30am.

With this recommencement, passengers across Overland Airways network including Lagos, Akure, Ibadan, Minna and Ilorin, amongst others can connect to Jalingo through our hub in Abuja.

Commenting on the issue, Capt. Edward Boyo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Overland Airways, expressed delight with the reintroduction of the flight services to Abuja-Jalingo-Abuja.

Boyo said that this would not only enhance connectivity, but also boost economic activities in Taraba State in particular and the Northeastern region of Nigeria in general.

“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Governor of Taraba state, His Excellency Dr. Agbu Kefas for his unwavering support and commitment to the development of the Danbaba Suntai Airport.

“We would like to also thank our customers for their patience and understanding and assure them of our usual excellent customer services,” he said.

Nigeria Mourns Ex-NEC Chairman, Nwosu as Tinubu, Soludo, Others Pay Tributes

In a heartfelt tribute, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has characterized the passing of former National Electoral Commission (NEC) Chairman, Professor Humphrey Nwosu, as a profound loss to Nigeria. The commendation came during the professor’s funeral service held in his ancestral home in Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Representing President Tinubu, Minister for Works, Senator Dave Umahi urged Nigerians to reflect upon Professor Nwosu’s significant contributions to the country’s democratic process. He called for a united effort among citizens to harness the benefits of democracy and honour Nwosu’s legacy.

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, who addressed the gathering, noted Professor Nwosu’s crucial role as a peacemaker.

He urged residents of the state to prioritize efforts that foster lasting peace within their communities.

Governor Soludo also highlighted the necessity of posthumously honoring Professor Nwosu, recognizing his achievement in conducting what has been described as Nigeria’s freest and most transparent elections.

During the service, Nnaemeka Nwosu, the late professor’s first son, expressed gratitude toward the federal government for the opportunity given to his father to serve as the Chairman of NEC during a pivotal time in Nigeria’s electoral history in 1993. He described his father, Professor Nwosu, as a man committed to peace and service.

In a poignant sermon, the Right Reverend Samuel Ezeofor, Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, urged the congregation to serve God diligently, noting the inevitability of death. He reflected on the ephemeral nature of life, reminding attendees that Professor Nwosu exemplified a life of humanitarian service, having distinguished himself as a Knight.

The funeral service witnessed an outpouring of condolences from various dignitaries, including the Governor of Abia, Dr Alex Otti and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, along with other prominent figures, all gathered to pay their respects to a man whose legacy will continue to resonate in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Plateau boils as gunmen k!ll ten mourners at funeral

At least 10 persons have been confirmed killed by suspected gunmen at Ruwi Village of Bokkos local government council of Plateau State.

A reliable source told our correspondent that the gunmen stormed their community at about 10pm Thursday night, opening fire on innocent persons mourning the death of their loved ones.

Meanwhile, Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Adesina, in a statement in Jos and by the Command’s Spokesman, DSP Alfred Alabo, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of the state over the incident.

The statement explained that the Command received a report of on 27th March, 2025, at about 10pm that some unknown armed hoodlums invaded Ruwi village at about 09:20pm where they started shooting sporadically.

“As a result, some law abiding citizens of the community who were at a wake-keep ceremony mourning the demise of their loved ones, unfortunately lost their lives, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” police said.

Upon receiving the report, the statement added that the Commissioner of Police immediately directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Bokkos to mobilise and deploy officers to the scene for necessary action.

The statement stressed that the CP also deployed additional manpower and operational assets from the State Headquarters to Bokkos and its surrounding local government areas.

He also directed the Area Commander Pankshin to relocate his base to Bokkos for strict supervision of all operations, and to avoid reoccurrence of such unfortunate incidents until normalcy is restored.

The statement added that CP Adesina has visited the scene of the attack to assess the level of deployment and to personally commiserate with families of the affected persons.

The CP assures the good people of Plateau State that the Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of lives and properties of the good and peace-loving citizens of the state.

“We are doing everything necessary within our Constitutional powers to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous and inhuman act are arrested and made to face the full weight of the law,” he said.

He urged the citizens of Ruwi Village and the surrounding communities to remain calm and cooperate with the Police to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Meanwhile, the Plateau State Government has condemned the killing of innocent persons in the Ruwi Village attack.

A statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon Joyce Ramnap in Jos conveyed the sympathy of the state government to the deceased persons’ families.

It condemned the acts of lawlessness, stressing that the unholy act undermines government’s effort in entrenching harmonious living among all persons resident in the state.

“The Barrister Caleb Mutfwang administration would not tolerate brutal killings of innocent citizens in any parts of the state.

Government have directed security agencies to hunt and track down the perpetrators of the heinous crimes and ensure justice for the victims,” the statement added.

The state government further urged the citizens to remain calm as security operatives carry on their investigation.

Expressing heartfelt condolences to the affected families, the Governor prayed God to grant the families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and heal the injured.
