The Gombe State government says it would send parents and guardians to jail for not sending their children to schools.
Babaji Babadidi, Chairman, Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, said this on Monday at the inauguration of the 2025/2026 School Enrolment Campaign at Amada in Akko Local Government Area of the state.
He said that defaulting parents could face a two-month jail term under Section 19(2) of the SUBEB Amendment Law 2021.
Babadidi said the measure was necessary to ensure that every child has access to quality basic education.
“Every parent should ensure that his child or ward attends and completes primary, junior and senior secondary education.
“Any parent, who contravene Section 19(2) of the law commits an offence and is liable, upon conviction, to pay a fine or serve a one-month prison sentence.
“Subsequent convictions also attract a substantial fine or imprisonment for a term of two months,” he said.
Babadidi said prior to this enrolment campaign, the state government adopted a carrot approach by providing free education.
“However, if we fail to meet our target of enrolling 400,000 students into primary schools this session, we will revert to the stick approach by enforcing the law.”
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Aishatu Maigari, said the state has over 700,000 out-of-school children.
According to Maigari, the North-East region accounts for 15 per cent of Nigeria’s 18.2 million out-of-school children.
“We cannot sit and fold our arms while our children remain out-of-school. We will ensure every child is enrolled. Every child will receive quality education, and also learn a trade, which does not necessarily mean working for the government.
“An educated person can become an employer of labour through skills and entrepreneurship acquired in school,” she said.

SAD! Lassa Fever Kills 214, Fatality Rate Rises To 25% — NCDC
Lassa fever has claimed 214 lives in Nigeria, with the case fatality rate rising to 25 per cent.
According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention Lassa Fever Situation Report for Week 23 (June 1 to June 7, 2026), the fatality rate represents an increase from the 18.9 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.
“New confirmed cases remained steady in Week 23, matching the number recorded in Week 22. Infections were reported in Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, and Ebonyi states. No new healthcare worker infections were reported during the week.
“The outbreak has spread across 23 states and 109 Local Government Areas since January 2026,” the report stated.
Suspected and confirmed cases have also increased compared to the corresponding period last year.
According to the agency, five states account for 84 per cent of all confirmed cases.
“Ondo leads with 28 per cent, followed by Bauchi with 25 per cent, Taraba with 15 per cent, Edo with 10 per cent, and Benue with six per cent. The remaining 16 per cent of cases are spread across 18 other states with confirmed infections,” it added.
The agency noted that young adults remain the most affected demographic.
According to the NCDC, the predominant age group is 21–30 years, with cases ranging from one to 93 years and a median age of 30 years.
The agency said that, to coordinate the response, the National Lassa Fever Multi-Partner, Multi-Sectoral Incident Management System remains activated.
It explained that the IMS is supporting response activities at the federal, state, and local government levels.
Although no new healthcare worker infection was reported in Week 23, the NCDC said the higher fatality rate and wider geographical spread indicate continued transmission.
Surveillance and case management efforts are ongoing across the 23 affected states, the statement added.

Nigeria-Côte d’Ivoire Reaffirm Strong Ties as Ambassador Nwaobiala Presents Credentials
By Gloria Ikibah
Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and advancing regional cooperation following the formal presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, His Excellency Ezenwa Chukwuemeka Nwaobiala.
The ceremony, held at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan on 18 June 2026, officially marked the commencement of Ambassador Nwaobiala’s diplomatic assignment after his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The envoy was accompanied by his wife, Lady Chidinma Nwaobiala, during the presentation to President Alassane Ouattara.
During the event, Ambassador Nwaobiala conveyed the goodwill of the Nigerian President to his Ivorian counterpart and reaffirmed Abuja’s commitment to strengthening the long-standing relationship between the two West African nations.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Ouattara welcomed the Nigerian envoy and underscored the importance of the enduring friendship between both countries, expressing his willingness to work closely with the ambassador to expand cooperation in areas of shared interest, particularly regional integration and economic development.
The ceremony highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire and reinforced their common resolve to promote peace, stability and prosperity across the West African sub-region.
Speaking later at a reception organised in his honour by members of the Nigerian community in Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Nwaobiala reflected on the deep historical and cultural links between the two countries.
The ambassador also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the confidence placed in him, pledging to serve Nigeria with dedication and integrity.
“Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire are bound not only by geography, but by history, shared aspirations and an unwavering commitment to the ideals of African unity and prosperity.
“I express gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the confidence reposed in me and pledge to undertake my responsibility as Ambassador with humility, a sense of duty and firm resolve to advance the enduring interests of Nigeria while strengthening the bonds of friendship and partnership between the two brotherly nations”, he said.
Ambassador Nwaobiala further assured Nigerians and his host country of his determination to promote stronger cooperation and mutual understanding throughout his tenure.
He pledged his “commitment to fostering greater understanding, mutual respect and productive collaboration for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries,” while urging the international community to embrace dialogue and partnership as the foundation for global progress.
“Nations around the world should continue to build bridges and partnerships, in place of walls and partitions”, he added.
His presentation of credentials comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen diplomatic engagement across Africa, with renewed emphasis on regional integration, economic cooperation and collective efforts to advance peace, security and sustainable development within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and beyond.
