Send Your Kid To School or get jailed – Gombe govt cautions parents

The Gombe State government says it would send parents and guardians to jail for not sending their children to schools.

Babaji Babadidi, Chairman, Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, said this on Monday at the inauguration of the 2025/2026 School Enrolment Campaign at Amada in Akko Local Government Area of the state.

He said that defaulting parents could face a two-month jail term under Section 19(2) of the SUBEB Amendment Law 2021.

Babadidi said the measure was necessary to ensure that every child has access to quality basic education.

“Every parent should ensure that his child or ward attends and completes primary, junior and senior secondary education.

“Any parent, who contravene Section 19(2) of the law commits an offence and is liable, upon conviction, to pay a fine or serve a one-month prison sentence.

“Subsequent convictions also attract a substantial fine or imprisonment for a term of two months,” he said.

Babadidi said prior to this enrolment campaign, the state government adopted a carrot approach by providing free education.

“However, if we fail to meet our target of enrolling 400,000 students into primary schools this session, we will revert to the stick approach by enforcing the law.”

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Aishatu Maigari, said the state has over 700,000 out-of-school children.

According to Maigari, the North-East region accounts for 15 per cent of Nigeria’s 18.2 million out-of-school children.

“We cannot sit and fold our arms while our children remain out-of-school. We will ensure every child is enrolled. Every child will receive quality education, and also learn a trade, which does not necessarily mean working for the government.

“An educated person can become an employer of labour through skills and entrepreneurship acquired in school,” she said.

NILDS DG Probe: Reps Committee Demands Proof, Halts Hearing Pending Evidence

The House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Library, Research and Documentation has asked petitioners accusing the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Suleiman Abubakar, of alleged participation in a governorship primary election while still in office to substantiate their claims with credible evidence before the inquiry can proceed.

The directive was issued on Thursday during an investigative hearing in Abuja, by the Chairman of the committee, Rep. Yusuf Galambi, where he noted that the petitioners had yet to present sufficient documentary proof to support their allegations.

Galambi explained that the hearing could not continue in the absence of verifiable materials capable of establishing a ‘prima facie’ case.

The investigation stems from a resolution of the House, which emphasised the need to ensure strict adherence to constitutional provisions and public service rules governing the conduct of political office holders and their involvement in electoral activities.

The committee was mandated to examine claims that the NILDS Director-General allegedly took part in a governorship primary election without first resigning his appointment, as required under relevant laws and civil service regulations.

As part of its directive, the committee chairman instructed the petitioners to return with concrete documentation, including political party records, nomination papers, and forms of expression of interest purportedly linked to the NILDS boss, before any further consideration of the matter.

“The committee is unable to proceed in the absence of credible and verifiable evidence to substantiate the allegations before us,” he said.

He said the committee would consider issuing another invitation to the NILDS boss after receiving the required evidence.

Galambi, however, maintained that the committee would proceed with the investigation regardless of the Director-General’s appearance, noting that a formal invitation had been duly extended to him and that his absence would not impede the panel’s work.

Lawmakers questioned the absence of the Director-General of NILDS ss a member of the committee, Rep. Harrison Anozie, expressed concern that the NILDS chief failed to honour the committee’s invitation despite what he described as adequate notice.

“In the matter referred to this committee, we have extended invitations to all parties, especially the DG, who has been alleged to have participated in a political process without resigning his appointment as required by the Constitution and the directive of Mr President,” Anozie said.

He stressed that the Director-General had been given sufficient time to appear and respond to the allegations.

“He ought to be here to state his own side of the story. A proper notice was served on him, and ample time was given for him to appear before this committee,” he said.

Despite the absence, Anozie insisted that the committee will not allow its work to be derailed.

In the course of proceedings, Rep. Chinedu Obika pressed the petitioners on whether they had any video evidence to back claims that the NILDS boss participated in the primary election in question.

Responding on behalf of the petitioners, Williams Amuga of the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) said their allegations were based on reports and publications circulating on social media.

Following deliberations, the committee suspended the hearing and directed the petitioners to provide additional and verifiable evidence before the matter could proceed further.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has congratulated Kingsley Rufus Madaki on his appointment as Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, describing the development as a significant milestone for the media community in the Federal Capital Territory.

The appointment, announced by the Office of the Executive Chairman, is said to reflect confidence in Madaki’s “competence, professionalism, and dedication to the practice of journalism and public communication.”

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the NUJ-FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike on 17th June, 2026, the she said the elevation underscores the increasing recognition of journalists as key partners in governance and public engagement.

Maikalangu Reshuffles AMAC Leadership, Approves Key Revenue and Legislative Appointments

The Executive Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has approved a fresh wave of appointments and redeployments across critical administrative and legislative units in the council, in a move aimed at strengthening governance and improving service delivery.

According to a statement released by the council, the new appointments cut across the revenue mobilisation structure as well as the legislative arm, with immediate effect.

Those appointed include:
• Hon. Emmanuel Inyang  – Chairman AMAC Revenue Taskforce
• Hon. Bako Kamdu – Deputy Chairman AMAC Revenue taskforce
In the legislative arm the following were appointed:
• John Jezhi                  – Clerk  AMAC Legislative unit
• Hon. Isyaku Hassan  –  Deputy Clerk, AMAC Legislative unit
Hon. Ikibah Tonye Sebastian – Legislative Liaison Officer

The council said the appointments form part of efforts to reposition its administrative machinery for greater efficiency and accountability.

“The Executive Chairman congratulates the new appointees and charges them to discharge their duties with the highest level of professionalism, integrity, and dedication to the service of the people of AMAC”, the statement read.

The statement further noted that all appointments take immediate effect.

Maikalangu, who continues to push reforms across revenue generation and legislative coordination within the council, is expected to rely on the new officials to drive improved internal operations and strengthen institutional performance within AMAC.
